If there are to be two races, why do they both need to start at the same time? Why not give the folks at the antipodes a chance at a good sprint. 09:00 UTC is 1AM for me, 4AM for east coast North Am. and 11PM in New Zealand.
If we are holding two identical races, why not start one at a different time?
captjack, the initial thought SRC had with the two Sprints both starting at the same time was that would give SOLers an opportunity to participate in either of them. We all have duties that interfere with SOLing.. The start in Ornö Runt the 11th January will be at 1700 UTC. See you in Ornö Runt!

Will the start times of the other sprint doubles be reconsidered too?
I think chancing the start time with such short notice was not a good move, especially since this race counts towards the Sprint Championship. I had made some serious arrangements for my weekend schedule to be able to participate in the Saturday race since I will not be able to participate in the Sunday race in any case. Now with the new starting time it seems quite impossible for me to participate even on Saturday.

I do understand captjack's point and agree to it, however, that aspect could also be handled so that different races are held in different time zones and their respective starting times are as per the local timezone.

I also appreciate very much the work volunteers do for SOL, without you this fun wouldn't even be possible.
My opinions may have changed, but not the fact that I'm right.
All are entitled to their opinion, but Changes this Close to start is plainly not acceptable.
There seemed to be consensus that races would be started at convenient times for those living in the approximate arena of sailing, be that Europe, Americas or Pacific.
Changes to race start time have happened in the past and because of the problems this can cause, it has always been understood that they will always ONLY happen with a minimum of 24hrs notice.

The change to this start time was implemented yesterday evening at 1644utc which is more than 36hrs before the original start and 48hrs before the new start time.

This is the first month of the new-style calendar produced by the Sailonline Race Committee and I, personally, think they are doing a grand job... its very tricky to juggle all the calendar variables and get them right.

There are options with Sprints, as I see it:

(1) to have both Sprints each month start in the local-to-the-race timezone, and thereby make it impossible for half the globe to participate in a meaningful way

OR

(2) to have them both start at a sensible "Sunday morning time" in both hemispheres.

I have no doubt that the SRC will take on board everyone's comments and come up with a good compromise for future Sprint-racing.

Neumayer Station to Biscoe Wharf 2024

It’s Autumn now in Antarctica, the sun is permanently below the horizon, but during the day, from c 0900 to c 1700 local time, there is some twilight – nautical twilight, not to be confused with civil twilight which is brighter. The penguins are starting to huddle together to keep warm and the sea ice is growing. Time to get back to Biscoe Wharf then, before the water becomes impassible. Including a detour past Argentina’s main two Antarctic stations, it’s only 1900nm, so, although we’ll be in a hurry, we will take the bigger, better ice-classed Paratii 2 once more, just to be sure!

Melbourne to Osaka Prelude 2024

Welcome once again to what these days is Sailonline’s almost annual virtual Melbourne to Osaka Yacht Race. In real life, this double-handed 5500 nm race between these two sister cities, one deep in the southern hemisphere, the other high in the northern hemisphere, is run every four to five years, and is planned to be held again in 2025, so this race is a Prelude in partnership with the Melbourne Osaka Cup 2025 organising committee collaborating with the Ocean Racing Club of Victoria (ORCV), and the Sandringham (SYC) and Osaka Hokko (OHYC) yacht clubs. On this occasion, we’ll be racing the well-known First 40, a popular size of boat for a long-distance double-handed race. With the doldrums unavoidably lying across the track, you can expect to be at virtual sea for at least a month!
