	For the fourth year, Sailonline is delighted to be the virtual partner of Sail Training International for its summer season of tall ships racing. This year will see three events in the North Sea (a race from Harlingen in the Netherlands to Fredrikstad in Norway, a Cruise-in-Company from Fredrikstad to Bergen in Norway, a race from Bergen to Esbjerg in Denmark) and one off the coast of the British Isles (Falmouth to Royal Greenwich Tall Ships' Regatta ending in the heart of London). The Tall Ships Races 2014, organised by Sail Training International are being run during the months of July, August and September and Sailonline's virtual races will mirror the schedules of the real events as closely as possible. This virtual sailing experience runs hand in hand with Sail Training International's mission - the development and education of young people through the sail training experience, regardless of nationality, culture, religion, gender or social background. Sail Training International and Sailonline both count heavily on volunteer support with financial gain excluded from the equation. Sailing a tall ship, whether real or virtual - making navigational decisions in real wind conditions - can be a surprising experience, especially if you are more familiar with modern yachts, and makes one realise how truly remarkable were the sailors of bygone days who managed so successfully to sail the globe. This is truly a fun as well as an educational and insightful experience for all those who, for whatever reason, wish to sail tall ships. There are four classes of Tall Ship in the real races, ranging from the biggest Class A Square Rigged ships of more than 40m in length, down to training yachts of 9.14m. Sailonline has developed performance polars based on published data for several tall ships, and will be sailing a Class A ship in each event. Neumayer Station to Biscoe Wharf 2024

It’s Autumn now in Antarctica, the sun is permanently below the horizon, but during the day, from c 0900 to c 1700 local time, there is some twilight – nautical twilight, not to be confused with civil twilight which is brighter. The penguins are starting to huddle together to keep warm and the sea ice is growing. Time to get back to Biscoe Wharf then, before the water becomes impassible. Including a detour past Argentina’s main two Antarctic stations, it’s only 1900nm, so, although we’ll be in a hurry, we will take the bigger, better ice-classed Paratii 2 once more, just to be sure!

Melbourne to Osaka Prelude 2024

Welcome once again to what these days is Sailonline’s almost annual virtual Melbourne to Osaka Yacht Race. In real life, this double-handed 5500 nm race between these two sister cities, one deep in the southern hemisphere, the other high in the northern hemisphere, is run every four to five years, and is planned to be held again in 2025, so this race is a Prelude in partnership with the Melbourne Osaka Cup 2025 organising committee collaborating with the Ocean Racing Club of Victoria (ORCV), and the Sandringham (SYC) and Osaka Hokko (OHYC) yacht clubs. On this occasion, we’ll be racing the well-known First 40, a popular size of boat for a long-distance double-handed race. With the doldrums unavoidably lying across the track, you can expect to be at virtual sea for at least a month!
