Board » Flag Officers » Races » Dear SRC, did I missed something?

I was looking to the SOL “Gasparilla Raid 2014” NOR and, once again, I’ve found out that I must be missing something.

The NOR says, namely (pls have a look on the first pic):

“BRG is the bearing from ship to mark at scoring position.

1: Treasure Ship - Leave 23N40.6934 082W02.3943 to Starboard - BRG 309
2: Isla Perez - Leave 22N23.3040 089W41.7120 to Starboard - BRG 068”.

The Race bearing between (pls have a look on the second pic):
a) Middle of starting line and mark 1 - “Treasure Ship” - is 178,774º;
b) Mark 1 - “Treasure Ship” - and mark 2 - “Isla Perez” is 259,624º;
c) Mark 2 - “Isla Perez” - and middle of the finish line is 56,988º.

Do they look familiar to the NOR mentioned ones?

The bearings mentioned by brainaid are the bearing from your boat to mark at the moment/position of rounding the mark ("scoring position").

In this case, to round "Treasure Ship" your bearing to that mark must be 309.

PS: I'm not SRC, but I hope this helped ;)

Viva Huib,

Thank you for the explanation but, I think this style of info can mislead you to wrong interpretations.
For instance, if you pass the right turning point is it ok to assume the same suggested bearings?
Or, when you have to make 2, 3 or more direction changings in your HDG (contour an island, tacking in-between, etc.) does the suggested bearing makes any sense?
I found it would be more suitable to have the direct bearings between marks, and just that.
Sail Fair.
The bearing has a direct relation to how the sol sailing engine handles rounding of marks. I agree, it's not really something for in a NOR and it's somewhat misleading (I've been confused for quite a while as well).

Rapallo to Nador 2026

Welcome to Liguria’s Rapallo, there where Zarathustra spoke - at length - to Nietzsche, for our first race of nine to celebrate all things Mediterranean - fickle winds, history and olive oil. A number of our races in this new Magical Mediterranean series will be partnership with famous real-life races, but this first race is pure fiction - 780nm in refurbed IMOCA 60s, past or through the Balearic Isles and on into the Alboran Sea, to a finish off Nador on the Maroc Mediterranean coast.

Red Eye - Melville Island PYOC 2026

Melville Island is the largest of the Tivi group opposite the port of Darwin in the Timor Sea. Tropically forested and thinly populated, not a lot goes on there, but let’s race around it anyway, lar- or starboard round, it’s a little more than 120nm, so, no matter where you are navigating from on the planet, you will be hard-pressed to complete the course aboard your J-80 in daylight hours!

Cross the Convergence 2026 - Guam to Ouvéa

The third race of our series of ocean voyages across the World’s convergence zones takes us southeastward now down the Pacific, from Guam’s Apra Harbour at 13.5 degrees North, back across the Equator to the glorious New Caledonian resort island of Ouvéa, on the edge of the Tropic of Capricorn at 20.5 degrees South. It’s 2400nm, and there’s more than a few other islands in the way, so mind where you go in your Ocean 50s. Race #1981
