Proposing a race around North America to somewhat follow what Matt Rutherford did when he circumnavigated the America's.

Documentary of Matt's journey:
http://reddotontheocean.com/

This SOL version is being proposed to run in legs. I have attached a KMZ file with a proposal for leg 1, and an alternate longer leg 1 option.

I am proposing a Timed race for two reasons. First to allow racers to sail solo (against the clock) instead of as a straight race. Second to also allow all to choose a good start time for themselves. This would make it more of a solo venture in my book.

However, I would say we only leave it open for perhaps 10-14 days past the first boat finishing, so as not to leave it running forever. So, racers will be asked to start within 3-5 days of the race open date or risk not finishing by race close.

I will continue to add leg's if this race get's picked up.

Renegade (David)

In the poll please select either A or B, and either C or D.

Updated the KMZ with full 5 legs, and one alternate start. We could do Leg 1 & 2, or the Alternate Leg 1.
Leg 4 could be a normal Timed or Sprint leg.

Odd, as a test I selected B (longer alternate leg 1) and C: Timed race.

However it shows C & D were selected instead of B & C.

Is the polling algorithm accurate?

I edited the poll to allow 4 choices instead of 2. Perhaps it didn't work for me because I only allowed 2 choices. Not sure.

You need to use the checkbox that is above the answer you choose.
This one looks like a serious challenge! I am not sure of the details of Matts journey but I see in my mind that we can close the loop and include a transit of the Panama Canal as a further addition. I have always wanted to get this SOL badge but have never gone 'Off' course in any of our longer races because of my needing to post a good finish each time!

Just a thought!
Exactly as I envisioned it. It's a bit long for a single leg. So I am thinking of legs up to the Panama canal. Then do a normal timed race across the canal and then a finishing leg after.

I'm going to continue to work the KMZ file but initially wanted to get some feedback on the length of the first leg, and have two options in the current kmz file.
Sorry, that SOL post was me using my other browse. oops.
I've just finished the plan for this race and replaced the KMZ. There is a full 5 legs, (Leg 3 could be broken into two steps if need be.) I think each leg is doable. Leg 4 (panama canal) I think is best run as a normal timed race.

I did not put in a leg to do the Chesapeake Bay itself, but we could add a small timed race to do a bay circuit either before or after the legs start.

Starting this cycle of legs could begin as soon as the calendar allows, or we could plan it for next year. We could also do one or more legs in each quarter to break it up a bit too.

My feeling is to enhance the solo/single handed experience Matt faced, that each leg should be a timed race. Only one run will be able to be completed, so I would say all boats need to start within 1, 3, 5 or 7 days of the race open. The race close could be two weeks after the first boat finishes. That way all boats have roughly the same time to finish, and with the weather lottery, and distances, late starting boats could easily catch early departing boats.

I would strongly recommend all boats to start within 24 hours after the race opens, at the first agreeable time for each SOLer's schedule, to allow maximum time on course.

I am considering this proposal finished and await feedback.
Hi Renegade,
I know it has been a while since you posted your suggestion but SRC are now incorporating the legs from 1. New Brunswick to Greenland and 2. Greenland to Barrow and finally 3. from Barrow to Vancouver into Other races in 2017Q2.
We will be using a Super Maxi 100 as such comfort will be required in these Northern Latitudes.
Any input before we publish in a week or so?
Hi Richard,
This sounds good to me. Let me know if you need anything from me in the next day or two. I have minimal online time on weekends, but should have some tomorrow, Monday (16:00UTC) at the latest.

Transat à Deux 2025

Above you see a single-handed sailor semi-foiling his Beneteau Figaro III to the horizon. It is in fact Ireland’s Sailor of the Year and the overall winner of last year’s Solitaire du Figaro, Tom Dolan. Somehow, we got our hands on a polar for the Class, and rather than trying to surreptitiously track Tom and his mates in the 2025 edition of the Solitaire, sailing rather-short, single-handed legs across the Celtic Sea and Biscay, we thought we’d see how our virtual craft would fare on the Class’s double-handed 3900nm Trans-Atlantic, from somewhere in Brittanny to somewhere in the Caribbean via somewhere in the Canaries. Allez, mes braves!

Sinbad by Balloon 2025 - Toamasina to Baia de l'Oiseau

You may recall that when last we visited Madagascar in the company of Sinbad, the Sultan commanded our intrepid inspirator to seek out fabled islands where in Summer the sun barely set. We did and we returned but the Sultan wasn’t happy with Sinbad’s report, so here we go again, now by SOL Balloon instead of sailing vessel. Expect to be in the air for at least 2100nm and depending on how the wind brings us, anything between two weeks and two months before we shall descend at the Sultan’s given coordinates!
