Board » In memoriam » RIP Yachtyakka - Steve Alloway

Page: Previous 1 2

Steve is sadly gone but his spirit and passion for sailing still lives on in all those he inspired. He was larger than life, full of enthusiasm and never gave up.

In his last sail at the end of april, we won a gold cup in the Townson owners regatta, seemingly just for turning up and getting it on, it was more or less a forgone conclusion for the division we entered but a trophy's a trophy, so why knot!

If I had any take home advise from my year sailing with Steve regarding how to win races, it'd be: Turn up, Go hard or go home and the best for last, We're not here to f*** spiders! which is sound advise when your drifting in a dead maggot.

Thanks Steve
2005 auckland the rum race ! i walked past a chap and asked with broken english , do you know where i can learn to sail , he said its your day mate , come on we sail and you'll be the weight ! 19 stone am i ! off we went to insult aussis and jaffas and i got so many new words !
a lot of these races happened and we drunk a lot of rum , down at ponsonby cruising club ( true shit ) or sometimes with the ponzy one , royal New Zealand yacht squadron i think, something straight at the top at auckland marina , many wonderful evenings is what we had , a year later i opened up a restaurant on his island , the waiheke- paradise island , met his lovely wife sally , daughters Jessica and Anna Marie , i cherished every moment , last year they came to visit me back home in Europe and i did what i could to pay him(his family ) back, never could i do enough - again a wonderful time , next thing you know i am the under archiving news reporter at the Louis Vuitton cup in Portsmouth all inclusive !!! man what a gem , the many a people he toughed and enjoyed will make for a never ending memory ! Sail on buddy we will see each other again , to your family, i send my deepest feelings , hugs and wish for you as little pain as you possibly could have , i know how great you are and if you really need me ill come back ! xxxx

There is something so lovely about reading all these comments and anecdotes about our brilliant Yakka.

Knot sure how often I will use the expression "we're not here to f*** spiders" but... it's now in the memory banks. Thanks idle

I was just setting up the SSANZ Trio of races in the database and thinking to myself that his remarkable spirit will really live on in Auckland racing - virtual and real - it seems!

Saddened to hear this... I have had quite a few chats with YY over the years. Genuine bloke... will be sorely missed by the SOL community.

Fair winds mate
I like to talk a lot... sometimes I even make sense, mostly not...
When someone adored by all travels so early and leaving such good memories on everybody, it is not a departure.
It’s only a “see you” mate.

I’ll be with you in Auckland.

A Big Hug to Steve’s family.
We are with you.

Transat à Deux 2025

Above you see a single-handed sailor semi-foiling his Beneteau Figaro III to the horizon. It is in fact Ireland’s Sailor of the Year and the overall winner of last year’s Solitaire du Figaro, Tom Dolan. Somehow, we got our hands on a polar for the Class, and rather than trying to surreptitiously track Tom and his mates in the 2025 edition of the Solitaire, sailing rather-short, single-handed legs across the Celtic Sea and Biscay, we thought we’d see how our virtual craft would fare on the Class’s double-handed 3900nm Trans-Atlantic, from somewhere in Brittanny to somewhere in the Caribbean via somewhere in the Canaries. Allez, mes braves!

Sinbad by Balloon 2025 - Toamasina to Baia de l'Oiseau

You may recall that when last we visited Madagascar in the company of Sinbad, the Sultan commanded our intrepid inspirator to seek out fabled islands where in Summer the sun barely set. We did and we returned but the Sultan wasn’t happy with Sinbad’s report, so here we go again, now by SOL Balloon instead of sailing vessel. Expect to be in the air for at least 2100nm and depending on how the wind brings us, anything between two weeks and two months before we shall descend at the Sultan’s given coordinates!
