Board » Flag Officers » Races » SWR Leg 6 Finish

The last WP Motuihe Buoy is very unlikely to be used the real boats. They will go down the Rangitoto Channel and be seen from the suburbs on the North Shore. This is a historic course that has been used on many previous ocean races. Very few ocean races or even the longer coastal races would have a mark to the SE of Motuihe Island.

The finish in Auckland should be revised with the WP (if needed) located off North Head. Good practice with ocean races such as this would be to have the finish in relatively open water to allow those who like sleeping or working to have a reasonable chance of finish with dcs. I suggest the finish is in Rangitoto Channel.

Sail Fair.
I fully agree that we should have the finish line in relatively open waters following this long ocean race. We discussed same issue when we finished in Hong Kong!

/SKOVSER
SRC has amended already, without adverse comment from any of the fleet (so far as SRC is aware), the finish and start lines for Melbourne (to outside the Rip and avoiding intermediate marks in Phillip bay on the way up to and from Melbourne) and the finish and start lines for Hong Kong (to outside Hong Kong harbour, avoiding traffic separation requirements on the approach to Kong Kong, a narrow harbour entrance and more traffic separation in Hong Kong harbour). In each of the above instances an approach buoy was added by SRC/OPS to ensure a) a run of several hours to facilitate the finish and b) to ensure that the SOL software produced a finish line roughly perpendicular to the general approach of the yachts. In the case of Auckland a similar approach was taken by SRC/OPS to facilitate a finish within Auckland harbour after a clear run of several hours from Motuihe Buoy. In the case of Auckland the SOL finish line is about 435m north of the IRL line so as to enable a fixed course from the Motuihe Buoy. A similar approach to facilitating start and finish lines will be taken by SRC/OPS for the start from Auckland as the 0100 start in Auckland harbour is not DC'able (as recommended by the Board of Directors for any start that is 'inconvenient' to the majority of the SOL community). The start will be in open water NE of the harbour and thus DC'able. Of course it is quite possible that the wind could be due West or due East at some stage of the finishing period in to Auckland thus requiring tacking or gybing - as occurred to some for the Melbourne finish. But SRC can only try to facilitate a finish or start. SRC cannot control the wind direction - much as we might wish. Unless advised otherwise SRC intends to continue with this policy, save for buddied races, that emphasises that SOL races are won on the ocean not because of BBQs at tricky start or finish lines.
I don't really follow that logic. Instead of having a realistic finish or a shortened course for an appropriate finish to an ocean race, we have ended up with a course that will need numerous dcs to navigate a difficult mark rounding, avoid many islands and a 10nm final leg that will likely be upwind? The finish could have been 3nm east at the entrance to the inner harbour, where most of the local coastal and ocean races start and finish.

Tobruk to Iskenderun 2026

Welcome to the fourth of our nine races across the length and breadth of the Magical Mediterranean Sea, and the second that is not in partnership with a real-life event, this time for good reason, which we won’t get into here. From Tobruk to Iskenderun it’s 670nm in length, with the added complication that the island of Cyprus will be in your way. Hoping, possibly forlornly, for plenty of downwind sailing, we’ll take the Lagoon 55 for the voyage!
