Hi SRC. Just a comment on the ocean race starts. Some time ago there was a ruling on SRC designed ocean races that: 'The start will be placed in such a way as to enable a clear and uncomplicated start to the race.'

I'm writing in reference to the upcoming Lisbon Capetown race, though my comments could also be applied to a number of other recent races. Most races start somewhere between 17:00 and 19:00 (unless tied to real race times) which for many of us around the world (N and S hemispheres) is the middle of the night.

Regardless of start time, people somewhere around the world will not be able to check the WX before the race start. This I assume is the reason behind the ruling about 'clear and uncomplicated' race starts.

The Lisbon race course positions the start some 5nm up a narrow harbour entrance only 0.6 nm wide. This will be virtually impossible to navigate in a fast catamaran, especially if into a head wind, by DCs off an outdated WX.

For the sake of 5nms in a 5000nm race, it would make a huge difference to many SOLers if it had been moved just 5nm down the channel.
No doubt too late for change now, but to encourage participation in these races it would help if these ocean races started according to the racing criteria.

Quiberon Islands 2026


The Quiberon peninsula extends as a submerged granite ridge a further 15nm or so beyond the La Teignouse lighthouse on the rocks off its southern tip, surfacing as two small islands, Houat and Hoedic, the duck and duckling in Breton, 5nm and 10nm beyond the light. Treacherous, tidal waters, but on SOL that daunts us not. Of course, we've raced here before, mostly Timed Runs out of Quiberon around Belle Ile, just south of the islets, and back, but this time it's a sprint from Belle Ile's capital of Port Marie round the foul fowl and back. A triangular course of 22nm, appropriately enough for Moody S38.

Roma per Tutti 2026


Sailonline are honoured and delighted to have been asked to partner an online first Roma per Tutti yacht race with organizing yacht club, Circolo Nautico Riva di Traiano . In real life, this will be the 33rd edition of this 540nm offshore race from Rome’s Riva di Traiano to the Aeolian Islands and back. Online, the race will not only be our first partnership with CN Riva di Traiano, but also the second race of our Magical Mediterranean series. A number of Mini 6.50s have been entered for the 33rd edition of the Roma per Tutti; so our own vintage Mini is also our virtual yacht of choice for this one.

Rommel by Balloon 2026 - Through the Sahara


Generalfeldmarschall Johannes Erwin Eugen Rommel may have been that chivalrous, gallant tank commander of legend, led astray by the Prussian military traditions of loyalty and chain of command, but one thing he wasn’t, was mad. So, let’s do it anyway – not stick to the coast and the battle for logistical superiority – but depart the oases of Siwa south west into the desert for Agadez and its uranium. And let’s go by balloon, it’s only 2500km (1250nm)!

Falklands to Tasmania 2026
