Board » Flag Officers » Race proposals » Baikal Lake

@Renegade You mentioned Baikal Lake in the thread about Titicaca. There is an annual iceboat race on Baikal, which could be used as the basis for a SOL race. All we would need is polars for an iceboat. Ice boats can go very fast, so it would probably be fun. What do you think? See: https://www.idniyra.org/2019/10/13/dn-sailing-on-lake-baikal-in-march-2020/

I found info about iceboat polars in "Physics of Sailing: https://tinyurl.com/y9nfzjvd

Hi Zorba,
You might be surprised to find that SOL has been sailing a DN Iceboat polar annually for some years now on Lake Winnebago with the Neenah-Nodaway Yacht club. The boat is super fast.

@Renegade Great! I will post a kmz for Baikal lake iceboat race then. It may never happen, but it's then in the list for whenever...
On this matter and iced-over lakes in general, the DN polar was made with an 11-steden tocht in mind. Lake Khovsgol was the first lake we visited. We did a few more, but then, because the DN is so super fast, which made us switch off Perf Loss (switch of a flick) which of course allows tacking and gybing as often as you like, the ambition faded and only an annual buddied fun race on Lake Winnebago has remained.

Sorry have posted the original proposal x 3. Never get the hang of that attaching to forum posts.

wow, that's a thorough proposal.
Interesting they skated here in Vermont between '83-'85.

We also have Lake Champlain here. It doesn't freeze every year anymore either, but has some islands and is quite long as well.

@Zorba,
Were you able to find a course used?
I have one in mind, but if you have a kmz already attach it. We'll be setting up Q1 soon.

Hi Renegade,

I didn't figure out their exact course and I believe it was/is done in stages. But could start from the South near Irkutsk.
Winds are going to be unpredictable, so depending on how long the race is supposed to be a complete South to North, with a finish near Severobaikalsk would be my choice. The other way round with finish in the South could be done as well. It's a narrow lake, so I don't think waypoints are needed.

Rommel by Balloon 2026 - Through the Sahara

Generalfeldmarschall Johannes Erwin Eugen Rommel may have been that chivalrous, gallant tank commander of legend, led astray by the Prussian military traditions of loyalty and chain of command, but one thing he wasn’t, was mad. So, let’s do it anyway – not stick to the coast and the battle for logistical superiority – but depart the oases of Siwa south west into the desert for Agadez and its uranium. And let’s go by balloon, it’s only 2500km (1250nm)!

Welcome to yet another all-new route. This next race is part of our Ocean Championship as well as the ROW series. Falklands to Tasmania, is like last year's island to island.
