Board » Technical Support » Can't access SOL from one IP, yet okay from another.

Hi,
I have a rather odd problem occurring in that about 11am UTC yesterday, my access to SOL ceased. I could not play any of the three races I was sailing, Fastnet challenge or legs 1 or 2 of the Bosphore-bretagne. I tried using both of the computers on my home network and I just could not access the site, even after I cleared all of my history. I use Firefox generally. I tried using iE, but no better. Always got the message that the site could not be accessed. I turned machines off and on. no joy. I could access the rest of the web and my Emails normally.
I came to my office today and all works normally (different IP).
at home at lunchtime - still the same situation. I am perplexed.
If you have any ideas, could you also send them to my Email -simon@simondo.net, as I won't be able to see them as I can only access the site and hence the forum via work.
Much appreciated and I enjoy the SOL hugely.
(I must admit I did wonder if the RORC had somehow launched a denial of service attack and shut the SOL servers down)
Regards
Simondo
Hi Simondo,

I can't realy help you with this, it seems you did all the obvious stuff already. I suspect something in the internet connection.

Are you back up again? Or do you still have problems?
I am a ex-admin of SOL who joins in from time to time.
Thank you yes. I got up again sometime in the middle of last night. My ISP is also puzzled, but i think the problem must have been at their level as it came back on withiout me changing any further settings. Fingers crossed..
Thanks for your input.
Simondo
Could also be a DNS (Domain Name System) problem. All operating systems carry a cache of domain names that have been visited. Sometimes on calling up a domain an error occurs and usually you get a "could not access server at so and so domain". This can stick in your computer's DNS cache for several hours up to a day or so. If this is the case, you can flush the DNS cache. Just google "flush dns" for instructions on how to do this for your operating system.

The second race of our new series of ocean voyages across the World’s convergence zones, takes us northward again up the Pacific Ocean, now from Samoa at 13.5 degrees South, across the Equator to Hawaii, famed for its breaking surf and active volcanoes, on the edge of the Tropic of Cancer at 19.5 degrees North. Beketov by Balloon 2026 - In Siberia

Way-back-when France and England, and Spain as well, were squabbling about who should control what of North America, only to lose the most of it to their own insurging colonists, their eastern European neighbour empire, Russia, was quietly assimilating vast, thinly nomadically populated territory of its own – Siberia! Amongst the many explorers and adventurers that served Russia so well in these conquests was the Cossack hetman Pyotr Beketov. Let’s pretend we’re he and eschewing horseback, let’s travel by balloon from Yekaterinberg to Krasnoyarsk – just a short 2000km (1100nm) section of the Trans-Siberian Express’ 9289km!

West Papua to Oregon 2026

Our next race in our Ocean Championships is the first of a series of great natural migrations we will track in 2026. The leatherback turtle is the most widely distributed marine reptile on planet Earth, and chooses to breed in warm tropical waters, but prefers to forage in more temperate habitats, travelling thousands and thousands of miles effortlessly annually to maintain this way of life. Our race will follow one of the typical trips of this turtle, from breeding grounds in the seas off West Papua to the coast of Oregon. It’s only 5900nm, so to keep up, but in comfort, we’ll follow in our Gunboat 90.
