I think I would like to do the Channel islands race in something more weatherly than a Ctalina 470. I have sailed most of that course and your proposed race is all to weather. Perhaps a J-130 or J-125 if the polars are available. You have to be careful around San Miguel because there are lots of reefs around and you are playing just off Point Conception - known as the Cape Horn of the Pacific. The other thing is there is often very light air south of Catalina toward Oceanside. I have sat there many a nite racing from Marina del Rey to San Diego. Perhaps we coulde my boat, a Catalina 38 if we have sail polars for an old IOR warhorse
Likewise, my first reaction to the proposed course was, "why upwind from San Diego?". Here in California we usually set up our ocean races to run mostly downwind.

Reversing the course so that the start is Santa Barbara with a beat out the channel to San Miguel then salamon through the islands to finish off Pt Loma would be more like a southern Cal race. Upwind at the start...then mostly downwind and reaching.

Also should be in fast sled. or even a fast old boat like a Cal 40.

captjack I agree with you. Starting in Santa Barbara and ending up in San Diego would be better. You could either weave thru the islands are just go outside of all of them.
Down wind doing this in a Santa Cruz 70 would be my first choice.
easily done... will work on it on monday...

Red Eye - Myth of Malham 2025

In 1947, Hugh McLean & Sons of Gourock, Scotland built a radical racing yacht for John Illingworth, soon-to-be Commodore of the RORC, to a design by Laurent Giles. With a masthead rig, giving her ‘free’ sail area per the rules of the time, and short overhangs reducing pitching, Myth of Malham went on to win The Fastnet that year and again in 1949, and to compete in numerous Admiral's Cups. In 1958, in honour of the yacht, the Myth of Malham race was conceived - a mini-Fastnet to the first lighthouse on a rock west of Cowes, Eddystone, rather than the second, to be held in non-Fastnet years. IRL this year it has been raced already, but this stops us not from “Red Eye” racing its online 230nm in Fareast 31Rs, leaving how to deal with the Isle of Wight open to your own discretion.

Africa by Sea 2025 - Maputo to Mogadishu

The fifth leg of our exploration of Africa By Sea takes us north along the length of the Continent’s succulent sub-tropical and tropical Indian Ocean coast. Much fought over by traders and colonists both well-before and after a Portuguese expedition under the command of Vasco da Gama first sailed there from Europe back in the 16th century, it is yet to be properly explored as a yachting destination. With plenty of islands off- and inshore, small and very large, there is much to interrupt your 1900nm voyage and visit in your Swan 65, from Maputo to Mogadishu! Race #1858
