Board » Technical Support » Odd issue with race

I had an 'interesting' issue when I logged back in to the Channel Island Rumble race just now. As you can see in the screenshot, a number of things were wrong with the information displayed in the SOL client.
1 - My position was shown as it had been (exactly, course and all) a few (5ish?) hours prior
2 - My position in the fleet was displayed incorrectly and DTG was very wrong, even for the position it displayed me as having. I think it was showing the DTG from the most southerly point of my track as displayed??
3 - The last waypoint I had rounded indicated that I had not actually rounded it yet
4 - When I clicked on my name in the list of boats, my correct position was displayed

I managed to get things right again, by completely logging out of SOL, then back in and reload the client, but I thought I would let you know of this, as it may indicate some obscure bug in the client program...
Hope I am wrong and it was just some bad data delivered to my client :-)
I help develop the client interface for the best online ocean racing sim there is... __/)/)_/)__

Happens all the time when I put my computer in sleep mode. Simply push on the refresh button of your browser.
I have some old and new issues:

- new: Safari reloads automatically (erasing my rulers and switching to default zoom level) when I change from another browser tab into the race tab
- old: Safari freezes sometimes (browser still running but positions don't change any more until manual reload)
- Firefox shows context menue when I try to click the buttons (zoom etc) on the map or when I try to pan the map (like 2nd mouse button pressed)
- new (since the big boat symbol appeared): the straight predictor is not longer visible when I enter a course with the course tool on the map and the boat is not visible on the screen. Before this it was easier to set an precise cc on long distances
- new: Firefox builds up the map sometimes very slow
- new and good: Safari now updates the position after sleep mode without reload
- new: my job collides with SOL more often :(

Everything else is fine.

ciao
Bernd
The disappearing course line seems tied to zoom level. If your (at least my boat [on FF]) boat is off the view screen it goes away. This makes it impossible to set a precise course around a point, to a mark or to hit a finish line. The read out on the cursor is useless for this because it gives great circle bearing and not direct, same with divider tool. This make a difference in as little as 35~40 miles...enough to cause you to miss a finish line, miss a mark or hit land.

Personally I find the big ghost boat a bit annoying. Especially so when zoomed in in a big crowd of boats.

Can we please have the full course line back.

And while we're at it how about the ability to turn off the big ghost boat, and all the other boats (like in the old old client.

Jack
I agree in every point to CaptJack

Newport to Annapolis 2025

The Newport to Annapolis race, first held in 1947, is one of the most historic and well-known US East Coast blue water races. Linking two seaports dating from the US nation's birth, Annapolis and Newport, the race contrasts the country's largest estuary, the Chesapeake Bay, and the Atlantic Ocean. Since 1969, the route has run from Annapolis through the Chesapeake Bay to Newport. The SOLers will sail 470nm in their Carkeek40s in the original direction from Newport to Annapolis, including the Chesapeake, which is such a daunting challenge that the 1997–98 Whitbread Round the World Race for the Volvo Trophy added it to the course, as did the Volvo Ocean Race in 2002 and 2006.

Transat à Deux 2025

Above you see a single-handed sailor semi-foiling his Beneteau Figaro III to the horizon. It is in fact Ireland’s Sailor of the Year and the overall winner of last year’s Solitaire du Figaro, Tom Dolan. Somehow, we got our hands on a polar for the Class, and rather than trying to surreptitiously track Tom and his mates in the 2025 edition of the Solitaire, sailing rather-short, single-handed legs across the Celtic Sea and Biscay, we thought we’d see how our virtual craft would fare on the Class’s double-handed 3900nm Trans-Atlantic, from somewhere in Brittanny to somewhere in the Caribbean via somewhere in the Canaries. Allez, mes braves!

Sinbad by Balloon 2025 - Toamasina to Baia de l'Oiseau

You may recall that when last we visited Madagascar in the company of Sinbad, the Sultan commanded our intrepid inspirator to seek out fabled islands where in Summer the sun barely set. We did and we returned but the Sultan wasn’t happy with Sinbad’s report, so here we go again, now by SOL Balloon instead of sailing vessel. Expect to be in the air for at least 2100nm and depending on how the wind brings us, anything between two weeks and two months before we shall descend at the Sultan’s given coordinates!
