If a boat has overstood the lay line or a wind shift has caused a boat to find itself beyond said line, should not that boat have to lose ground to return to the center of the course at some point?

If a skipper has the option of waiting until after passing the finish line extended to make this correction, the wind condition on the line may be at odds with what may have existed earlier up the course.

This then would present two unequal choices and offer in some cases an actual unfair edge.

In the scenario you describe above, the possibility of crossing the finish line from behind can only provide a minimal advantage.

Indeed, if the wind dictates to wait for the tack or gybe until the last moment, then it also means that the fastest way to finish is to cross the line as close as possible to one of its extremities. Anything else is slowier.

The only difference is then one tack very close to the line (see attached picture). This is negligible. The perf loss due to the additional tack does not even last for the whole distance because you should cross the line immediately after the tack.

PS: In the attached picture, the differences between both options have been much exagerated for the sake of clarity. Both options should in fact cross much closer to the extremity.

Thank you for this detailed explanation which clarifies the matter.

I suppose that without right of way interaction the gravity of being outside of the lay line does not carry as much weight in this virtual environment.

Throw away unnecessary ballast from your boats. Fresh water has less buoyancy, which means greater draft and greater resistance to movement, which means lower speeds, etc.😊

Sinbad by Balloon 2025 - Carnarvon to Dondra


From here, our home in Bharatavarṣa is now north west of us – said Sinbad to his fellow balloonists. Camel or Balloon 2025 - Khartoum to N'Djamena


As there is a lull in the calendar, your PRO has decided to risk an experiment – a balloon race over land, using a workaround to eliminate the recognition of water/land transitions. If it fails, the server may crash, and we abandon PDQ, hopefully after leg 7 of the ABS race to Suez has been decided, and before the start of the 1st OCC of Q4. Camel or Balloon – c 1000 nm from a field on the north bank of the Blue Nile at Khartoum to a field on the north bank of the Chari River at N'Djamena!
