AHOY ALL MATCHRACERS - the Giraglia 2010 is up and ready for practice and so the first matchrace will be held tonight, Sunday 11 April 2010. TIME: 1800utc START: SOL race start ROUTE: To and round the island group, Iles de Lerins, at 43.52 / 7.05 FINISH: 43.70 / 7.32 (the bay of Saint-Laurent du var) ALL ARE V WELCOME TO JOIN IN - OR IF YOU PREFER, JUST HEAD TO THE FINISH WHICH WILL BE THE START OF THE NEXT PRACTICE RACE!! MATCHRACING FROM THE GUN ARE crzycanuk (CAN) newsartist (USA) Perenkist (NED) Rainbow (GBR) robert1 (SWE) stoertebaker (AUT) glynnwi (GBR)started 4mins after the gun. Smo and Victorious joined in later too. RANKING AFTER 1hr (based on DTG to Iles de Lerins) 1. Rainbow 30.2 2. Perenkist AND canuk AND stoerte 30.6 5. glynnwi 30.9 6. news 31.2 7. Smo 31.8 8. africa 32.2 9. Vic 33.8 MATCHRACE FINISH CHANGE!!! As the original finish is going to prove to be too far to go, the race will now finish by running ashore at 43.54 / 7.04 AFTER rounding the Iles de Lerins. PRE-SLEEP RANKING As time was pressing and some were already thinking of heading to sleep or on to tomorrow's start point, the final Ranking (based on DTG to the larger of the finish SLIs) was: 1. stoerte 6.3nm 2. Perenkist AND Rainbow 6.6nm 4. glynnwi 7.2nm 5. Smo 7.5nm 6. africa 8.9nm 7. robert 9.6nm 8. Vic 15.8nm 9. news 21.1nm 10. canuk - heading into the wide blue yonder! This is a little skewed as both SLIs need to be rounded and all except Rainbow are more offshore, hence better placed to make the approach to the finish point. With some heading off to other destinations overnight, the first finishers at the matchrace finish point were: 1. stoerte 2. Smo 3. africa 4. glynnwi (slightly off finish point) 5. Melbourne to Osaka Prelude 2024

Welcome once again to what these days is Sailonline’s almost annual virtual Melbourne to Osaka Yacht Race. In real life, this double-handed 5500 nm race between these two sister cities, one deep in the southern hemisphere, the other high in the northern hemisphere, is run every four to five years, and is planned to be held again in 2025, so this race is a Prelude in partnership with the Melbourne Osaka Cup 2025 organising committee collaborating with the Ocean Racing Club of Victoria (ORCV), and the Sandringham (SYC) and Osaka Hokko (OHYC) yacht clubs. On this occasion, we’ll be racing the well-known First 40, a popular size of boat for a long-distance double-handed race. With the doldrums unavoidably lying across the track, you can expect to be at virtual sea for at least a month!
