Tonight will see the first of a new style of practice race - called a Mad Weasel Chase, it will involve one boat setting off ahead of the main fleet which, at the start time of 1800utc, has to try and catch it.

The "Weasel" will be sailing on pre-set DCs and will start at an appropriate time ahead of 1800utc to give the racers a chance to catch up!!

START POINT: 43.543 / -5.670

ALL ARE V WELCOME TO JOIN IN THIS NEW AND NUTTY FORM OF SAIL-RACING!!!

--- Last Edited by RainbowChaser at 2010-05-08 09:42:58 ---
Nutty might be an understatement!

Ok, I've sorted out a string of DC that I *think* should keep the weasel just in front of the fleet for long enough to make it interesting but catchable within a reasonable time. Even if the wind changes dramatically I don't think the race should go too long. If the fleet catches too soon we'll make the weasel a turn mark and pick a beach for a standard finish?

Weasel takes a 1/2 hour head start. A catch is recorded when the weasel crosses another boats track line.

START POINT: 43.543 / -5.670

START TIME: 18:00 UTC

WEASEL DC LIST:

17:30 cc 11
18:05 cc 297
18:22 cc 17
18:40 cc 269
19:13 cc 339
19:36 cc 297
20:02 cc 272
20:29 cc 201
20:48 cc 4
21:13 cc 196

EVERYONE IS INVITED TO JOIN IN! Just make your way to the start where the boats are gathered just south of the SOL start.
RACING FROM THE GUN

bo_shanks(GBR)
CG (GBR)
NED Pano (NED)
Rainbow (GBR)
robert1 (SWE)
Smo (FIN)
stoertebaker (AUT)
Tersane05 (TUR)

but due to the arrival of visitors NED Pano stopped racing almost immediately.

newsartist (USA) - started 2mins after the gun.

glynnwi (GBR) - started 12mins after.

The Weasel was caught first by robert1 and almost immediately second by Smo just at the 1hr point!

A clear crossing of the racer's track by the Weasel = a win.

There was some discussion that once caught, the Weasel should turn TWA=0 and then other boats are ranked according to their arrival thereafter.

Also, if the Weasel isn't caught by the 2hr point, then it should turn TWA=0 and the race either finish withboats arriving at it OR it becomes a waypoint/rounding mark for the other boats to round and head to an agreed finish point.

All ideas for this kind of race are v welcome.

THANK YOU 76T!!!

That was fun!

I thought that we'd make it to the 2 1/2 - 3h point before the "catch"! Weasel races are tough on routers hehe.

Lots of input and ideas for next time :) hope to see everyone there!

The Vineyard Race 2025

For the first time since first hosting a virtual Vineyard in cooperation with Long Island's Stamford Yacht Club back in 2010, due to an operational calendaring error, Sailonline has missed the start of the real life race, the USA’s Labor Day weekend this year unusually falling across the turn of August. Silly SOL! So, a week late please join us anyway for a virtual rerun of Stamford’s iconic annual overnighter from their club line out the sound to Buzzard's Bay Light near Martha's Vineyard Island and back again, leaving Block Island to starboard. This year, Sailonline is making its magic MC 38 available to competitors, a race boat with a quirky polar that will require you to stay wide awake as you speed around the c 250 nm course, in rockstar style!

Africa by Sea 2025 - Maputo to Mogadishu

The fifth leg of our exploration of Africa By Sea takes us north along the length of the Continent’s succulent sub-tropical and tropical Indian Ocean coast. Much fought over by traders and colonists both well-before and after a Portuguese expedition under the command of Vasco da Gama first sailed there from Europe back in the 16th century, it is yet to be properly explored as a yachting destination. With plenty of islands off- and inshore, small and very large, there is much to interrupt your 1900nm voyage and visit in your Swan 65, from Maputo to Mogadishu! Race #1858
