Board » General Discussion » "Weekend races"

It seeems that most of the weekend races of late have been in very light wind, so therefore take untill about Tuesday or Wednesday to finish.
I thought we were having weekend races to accomodate the members that cant get online much during the week.
Is there any reason why the weekend races cant start on a Friday evening (UTC)so we might have a chance of finishing before Monday morning. and if it turns out that the wind has dropped or is going to drop during the race can there be a course change or an alternative back up course to be done with enough time so all will know.
If you look at the numbers of entrants in each race, this is a big drop on a year ago and maybe having races that gives everyone a chance of being able to finish before work time, might get some back.
Also the short Auckland race is a good idea but!!! the problem I can see with it being widweek is... Its 48 nm so it needs constant attention so you may not get many from the northern hemispere because of the time difference and work the next day. and also some of the southern hemispere sailors will have work and wont be able to sail.

Just another 2 cents worth :-)

I fully agree with the idea of friday afternoon / evening starts for weekend races.
I do not favour course changes during races. If a race takes longer due to light winds so be it.

Tempest

I meant a course change before the start say 24 hours or so..As we will know by then what the wind is likely to be during the race.
I am sorry Victory I misunderstood that. As long as it 24 hrs before a race i have no problems.
However i do not know how much of a strain this puts on SOL admins and/or resources to make it possible.
Good discussion victory and Tempest - going forward the calendar will definitely try to make sure that weekend races are raceable within a weekend.

There are some short IRL races coming up but perhaps rather than sail them as the same time as the IRl race, we could just do them on a weekend close-ish to the real date(s)?

By focusing on getting races set up and ready, my eye went off the "race in a weekend" ball.

A Friday evening in Europe start is probably no bad thing as it has the added benefit of being a Saturday morning on the other side of the globe, and is Friday midday-ish in the Americas.

As for changing a race at the last minute, I have confirmed that it is definitely possible to shorten a course so long as the race itself hasn't started. Those on the course practising need only refresh their browsers to reload the amended course.

Key for accomplishing this, though, will be an evident agreement in chat that a change is needed PLUS a post in this Forum confirming that the decision to change/shorten the planned course has been discussed/accepted.

Thanks guys!!

Thanks RC Keep up the good work.
The Auckland race might not work out to bad after all. Some half decent wind so should take to long!!!! :-)
victory - I just had a thought. Do you happen to know of any short-ish races offshore UK that would work for a weekend SOL race? Even if you haven't the time to creat the GoogleEarth .kmz file, just suggesting routing would suffice and others can do the rest!! :-)
RC Its not that I dont have time its that I just dont know how ;-(.
Any way how about this...Falkland Islands from Port Stanley to Sea Lion islands and back. Its about 140 nms.Always windy there!!!!
victory - that sounds like fun!!! I shall look into it.

Meanwhile, if you use Google Earth at all, and would like to find out how to create race files, then using Incog's guide to setting up races is how I learned. If you click on the .pdf file attached here all will be revealed!

:-)

Edited to add a rough .kmz file (missing full description) for your inf.

Also.. what boat-type should we use??

Newport to Annapolis 2025

The Newport to Annapolis race, first held in 1947, is one of the most historic and well-known US East Coast blue water races. Linking two seaports dating from the US nation's birth, Annapolis and Newport, the race contrasts the country's largest estuary, the Chesapeake Bay, and the Atlantic Ocean. Since 1969, the route has run from Annapolis through the Chesapeake Bay to Newport. The SOLers will sail 470nm in their Carkeek40s in the original direction from Newport to Annapolis, including the Chesapeake, which is such a daunting challenge that the 1997–98 Whitbread Round the World Race for the Volvo Trophy added it to the course, as did the Volvo Ocean Race in 2002 and 2006.

Transat à Deux 2025

Above you see a single-handed sailor semi-foiling his Beneteau Figaro III to the horizon. It is in fact Ireland’s Sailor of the Year and the overall winner of last year’s Solitaire du Figaro, Tom Dolan. Somehow, we got our hands on a polar for the Class, and rather than trying to surreptitiously track Tom and his mates in the 2025 edition of the Solitaire, sailing rather-short, single-handed legs across the Celtic Sea and Biscay, we thought we’d see how our virtual craft would fare on the Class’s double-handed 3900nm Trans-Atlantic, from somewhere in Brittanny to somewhere in the Caribbean via somewhere in the Canaries. Allez, mes braves!

Sinbad by Balloon 2025 - Toamasina to Baia de l'Oiseau

You may recall that when last we visited Madagascar in the company of Sinbad, the Sultan commanded our intrepid inspirator to seek out fabled islands where in Summer the sun barely set. We did and we returned but the Sultan wasn’t happy with Sinbad’s report, so here we go again, now by SOL Balloon instead of sailing vessel. Expect to be in the air for at least 2100nm and depending on how the wind brings us, anything between two weeks and two months before we shall descend at the Sultan’s given coordinates!
