Dear RC,

I am pleased to submit a proposal prepared by my sol-mates (sailors of high caliber)for an off-shore race 1430 nm long approx 7-9 days along the beautiful coast of Asia Minor. A challenging course passing through 2 straights and sailing on 4 different seas-Black Sea-Marmara-Aegean and Mediterranean . Preferable time of race September.

Our friends are planning to start such a (real life) race in 2011.

Please check the attachments and advise if they fulfill your requirements.

Best
Ahmet (TUR AC505)
Ahmet - what a super race!! thank you. I have added the kmz to the YahooGroup for good order but deffo September is a good time for running it.

Any chance you would be OK to start it a few days earlier?

Just the other day in chat I was saying that my birthday weekend (last one in August) needs a race, and I was going to invent one off Turkey (as I did a private gulet cruise off the S coast one year and loved it!!) so.. your round Turkey race would be ideal!

So would you/your friends be OK for us to start it in SOL on the last weekend in August?
Guess should be OK but let me check with them as there are some races at that time and they would definitely want to be by their pc when this race is taking place. Just give me a day.
No problem - we will deffo run it to suit your chums! :-) I was just being greedy!!
Hi RC,

Last week august is OK. Goblin wishes to write an article in Naviga Magazine http://www.navigamagazin.com/

and wants to know the exact dates to annnouce this race thus increase Turkish sailor participation in SOL.

Awaiting your reply. Ahmet
Hi Ahmet - that is excellent news!

Tonight and tomorrow I will set the race up in SOL and on Monday morning check that all works! As you know the SOL chart doesn't match GoogleEarth exactly. Once I have done that I will confirm that all is ready. Is that OK?

In principle, on the basis that the set up and initial testing looks good, we would aim to open practice on Tuesday, 24 August(at 1000utc) and then start the race on Saturday, 28 August (at 1000utc).

Would those dates suit you/ your chums?
GREAT, seems fine with us all we need is your confirmaion of these dates...i just arrived in Beirut and have a very poor connection. will check post on monday when i am back in istanbul.
AHMET - hope you had a good trip!

The dates we would propose are:

Practice Open: 1000utc 24 August 2010

Race Start: 1000utc 28 August 2010

Will they be OK?

The race was briefly showing on the SOL homepage earlier today as it was being tested/set-up. I think we've got the SOL course matching up with the design you have submitted!!

hello RC...back from beautiful but unfortunate city of Beirut.

I have indeed briefly seen the race posted under Races this morning and now its gone! however, as i understand from your post it will be tested and listed later. am i correct in my assumption? i need to know this as my friend is planning a write up in one of magazines as i had already told you. Pls confirm. Thanx. Ahmet
Ahmet -yeps the race is all set and ready to go! :-)

It has gone from the homepage as there are several races to be run before it. If you would like to check it out (I had to change quite a few of the waypoints to make the course-line run correctly) I will make it visible again for a few hours from now and you can look at it by logging in as sol (boatname: sol / password: sol).

Will that be OK??

Just one question - did you choose the First 40 for a particular reason? There are several boat-types available on SOL - there is a list in a post at the top of this Forum in case you would like to pick a different boat.

Also, would you like your SOL name or a group name to be the "inviter" for the race? If you look at Ouzo and Scurry you will see the SOLer names of those who have created the race is part of the description.

Otherwise all is set!! :-D

Africa by Sea 2025 - Suez to Port Said

When Napoleon (briefly) occupied Egypt at the turn to the 19th C, he ordered his expedition’s Directeur des Ponts et Chaussées, Jacques-Marie Le Père, to evaluate the ancient, derelict, infilled course of a Ptolemaic canal connecting the Red Sea to the Nile via the Great Bitter Lake, versus a new canal to the Mediterranean directly. Neither were considered feasible – locks to climb a pauvre-surveyed 10m sea-level difference, or continuous dredging of the Nile, would both be equally financially prohibitive. Fifty years passed before the unlikeliness of Le Père’s survey finding was challenged and a French Compagnie Universelle du Canal Maritime de Suez obtained a 99-year concession from the Khedive of Egypt, Said Pasha, to construct and operate a canal from the Red Sea to the Mediterranean, much against the will of the Ottoman Sultan, Abdulmecid I (the Pasha’s nominal overlord), and the wishes of the (Irish) British prime minister, Lord Palmerston. The year was 1859, the very number of this race (planning, dear boy, planning!), which, despite the canal’s double-super-tanker gauge and lack of locks, is strictly prohibited to sailors IRL. But not SOLers! 85nm in Fareast 28Rs to complete your circumnavigation of Africa!

Sinbad by Balloon 2025 - Carnarvon to Dondra

From here, our home in Bharatavarṣa is now north west of us – said Sinbad to his fellow balloonists. Perhaps we can ride the wind first further north, and then catch the winds that every year bring the rain, perhaps not. It’s 2600nm and we could be aloft awhile, so, Master el-Quarters, victuals only, no sandbags, provisioning the giant hamper. It will be not a picnic!
