to avoid having trouble with my DC's ı usually give 10-15 min buffer.. however yesterday in auckland race I set DC for 2 hours time with 15 min buffer to tack but again I missed the mark!if it was a dc long time ahead I would think it is whether change but just a 2 hours ahead and my tack point was very cleary after mark!

is there any useful hints somebody can help me?

A CC predictor wanders a little bit timewise but at fixed angle, while a TWA line moves side to side.

15 min is a lot though. If the 2.25h were over an update all bets are off. Not sure when you set the DC but it looks like maybe you were caught by the 2230 Wx?

what I was suprised Trombones was I left on CC so only problem could be wind dropped which was not enough wind for me to reach the mark before my dc! but did nt look like that.. the only problem I can see is my cc was to tight to the mark! so program might shifted my boat to starboat? ı dont know this is possible..

what do you usually do ? when you set dc do you leave the boat in cc ? what is your time buffer?

If there was an update, a degree or two of shift is enough to throw the (time) prediction out the window, even if the strength is the same.

I don't have a solution for planning across an update. Only real choice for a tight rounding is to wake up for the new weather and then set a DC you can trust, or to wake up for the rounding.

When I know that I'll skip one or more updates, sometimes I've used the shore as an "anchor" to keep a course on target: intentionally letting the boat ground and go TWA0 before the next (CC) DC kicks in. This is the only way that I can think of to know for sure where your boat will be when the DC kicks in, and can help trying to get through a narrow gap on DC. It's not fast of course. Wouldn't have been an option for your case.

Dyer Dhow Derby 2026


Most winter weekends, SOLer wsguerin and his friends at the Mamaroneck Frostbite Association venture forth on Long Island Sound to race Dyer Dhows, originally designed as WWII tenders. Indestructible little boats, great comradeship and serious short sharp races of 10 to 20 minutes duration. Sailonline now invites you to experience the joys of the Dhow in winter, virtually, by way of a slightly longer 14nm race: from Mamaroneck to Execution Rocks, over to the Gong Buoy and back to Mamaroneck. And if the wind pipes up to 20kn and beyond, you'll find SOL's customized polar will plane, rather than nosedive!

Iceland to the Falklands 2026

Welcome to an all-new route, the first of three Round the 'Old World' of Europe, Africa, Australia and Asia. To give each leg of the ROW a bit of length we'll try to hug the coasts as little as possible, so starting in Iceland our first leg of the series, which will also be the final leg of our Quarter 1 Ocean Championships takes us 7200nm to the Falklands, the full length of the Atlantic end to end.
