Board » General Discussion » Minimum Distance for any races?

Hello,
I am new here, and could not find any information on the minimum distance a race is allowed to be.
What is the minimum distance (NM) any type of race can be?
What is the maximum distance (NM) any type of race can be?

I have proposed a Florida - Bahamas - Florida race of 222.2NM.
Will shorter races be accepted? (i.e. - West Palm Beach to Miami or shorter?)

thanks
St. Lucie - Jupiter Ocean Racing Association (SJORA)
Hi CK... I'm new as well but found the Race Proposal (located in the folder thread) document quite helpful. It lists classifications as:

Drag races: a few hours
Week and Weekend races: ~2days
Offshore Races: ~5days
Ocean Races: >7days

Depending on the polar of the boat you choose and the local meteo, the race can be pretty fast or slow regardless on NM.

I designed a race in Phuket that was as short as 75nm and could be stretched out to 135nm with a few more marks. They Just have crappy wind now so I have to get more savvy at meteo to figure out when would be a good time.

Keep working on new races. I found them to be terrifically fun to put together!

Keep SOLing,

William
Shamrock,
Okay thank you. I missed that in my search.
That is good to know, I enjoyed putting together the Florida-Bahamas-Florida race of 222.2NM. Hope they can fit it in sometime soon.
I wouldn't mind putting together some more smaller races (drag races) off the east coast of Florida where I sail/race.

Morning guys!

Great to see two US SOLers designing races!! Don't forget races around your own continent... short/weekend races are always great to have and we don't have many of those for N America!

The other thing to bear in mind with short races is the way the server performs - CKH you just missed the Roslagen race, a classic tricky Swedish archipelago race, which worked because the boat used was not horribly fast and thus the server coped well with the many simultaneous commands being issued AND the "jumps" to calculate turns to avoid islands etc were acceptable.

Come and join in some of the short/informal/unofficial practice races that are held in the practice time before races start.

All info about them is posted in the SailTalk Chatroom of the relevant race and in the Races Forum.

Tonight, for example, at 1900utc there will be a practice race in the Stockholm-St Petersburg race :-)

That will give you a flavour for how SOL performs very close in!

As for your FL-BAH-FL race.. I will be setting that up shortly and once I have done that I will email you with how to log in as the sol boat and preview it!

The Vineyard Race 2025

For the first time since first hosting a virtual Vineyard in cooperation with Long Island's Stamford Yacht Club back in 2010, due to an operational calendaring error, Sailonline has missed the start of the real life race, the USA’s Labor Day weekend this year unusually falling across the turn of August. Silly SOL! So, a week late please join us anyway for a virtual rerun of Stamford’s iconic annual overnighter from their club line out the sound to Buzzard's Bay Light near Martha's Vineyard Island and back again, leaving Block Island to starboard. This year, Sailonline is making its magic MC 38 available to competitors, a race boat with a quirky polar that will require you to stay wide awake as you speed around the c 250 nm course, in rockstar style!

Africa by Sea 2025 - Maputo to Mogadishu

The fifth leg of our exploration of Africa By Sea takes us north along the length of the Continent’s succulent sub-tropical and tropical Indian Ocean coast. Much fought over by traders and colonists both well-before and after a Portuguese expedition under the command of Vasco da Gama first sailed there from Europe back in the 16th century, it is yet to be properly explored as a yachting destination. With plenty of islands off- and inshore, small and very large, there is much to interrupt your 1900nm voyage and visit in your Swan 65, from Maputo to Mogadishu! Race #1858
