We have a fast and furious ride in the Southern Ocean in one race, and another race using a Longboat..... Anyone recognize the beauty in this picture???

That pic really calls out for a caption doesn't it!

"How many oars are we meant to have?"

or

"SLI jumping is not as easy in reality"

I am sure others will have better ones!!
It's not quite on type, but our new square rigger polar waiting in the wings is meant to stand in for ships like Endurance. South Georgia->Elephant Island hmmm?
And the prize goes to 76T for recognizing the famous James Caird that carried Sir Ernest and crew from Elephant Island to South Georgia in what is seen as one of the most amazing small-boat passages ever ventured. I am creating a race to honor the the upcoming 95th anniversary of this epic voyage. Any thoughts on a polar?

SP
Didn't mean to give it away, though that's one of the iconic ocean sailing images of all time...

I always wanted an old lifeboat to convert to cruising.

What are you thinking for a course? The race that's always appealed to me is a alt-history "Shackelton Rescue" in the Square Rigger starting from Stromness on the E coast of S.G. round trip to Elephant Is. Upwind into the breach makes for some tricky seamanship in a boat that points twa 80 on a nice day.

Maybe we can make it a series... go for the Ross Sea Party next?

A lap of the Weddell sea would be nice as well, though less punishing in SOL with the lack of freezing etc. ;)
I was originally going to just do the actual course of the Caird from Elephant Island to the south shore of SG where they finally managed to land. I then considered making the finish in Grytviken to account for the overland portion the final team had to endure and to add a bit more effort for the race at the finish (just like the IRL saga)

I love the idea for a Shackleton Series! A bit of research and an unusual polar would make for a fun and different SOL experience!

Cross the Convergence 2026 - Samoa to Hawaii

The second race of our new series of ocean voyages across the World’s convergence zones, takes us northward again up the Pacific Ocean, now from Samoa at 13.5 degrees South, across the Equator to Hawaii, famed for its breaking surf and active volcanoes, on the edge of the Tropic of Cancer at 19.5 degrees North. It’s 2300nm, so we’ll take our very steady Steinlager II. Race #1982

Beketov by Balloon 2026 - In Siberia

Way-back-when France and England, and Spain as well, were squabbling about who should control what of North America, only to lose the most of it to their own insurging colonists, their eastern European neighbour empire, Russia, was quietly assimilating vast, thinly nomadically populated territory of its own – Siberia! Amongst the many explorers and adventurers that served Russia so well in these conquests was the Cossack hetman Pyotr Beketov. Let’s pretend we’re he and eschewing horseback, let’s travel by balloon from Yekaterinberg to Krasnoyarsk – just a short 2000km (1100nm) section of the Trans-Siberian Express’ 9289km!

West Papua to Oregon 2026

Our next race in our Ocean Championships is the first of a series of great natural migrations we will track in 2026. The leatherback turtle is the most widely distributed marine reptile on planet Earth, and chooses to breed in warm tropical waters, but prefers to forage in more temperate habitats, travelling thousands and thousands of miles effortlessly annually to maintain this way of life. Our race will follow one of the typical trips of this turtle, from breeding grounds in the seas off West Papua to the coast of Oregon. It’s only 5900nm, so to keep up, but in comfort, we’ll follow in our Gunboat 90.
