Board » Sailonline Yacht Club » web form and mobile interface

I struggled yesterday a couple of times as I was cycling to a theme-park with kids and later out to dinner. (I was only saved by the kind intervention of clash2)

It occurs to me that it would be good to have a very simple html form with basic location, speed and wind direction info and ability to enter instructions as on the client application. Possibly with a second form to view and delete stored instructions. Not too hard to do I think.

I would be happy to do this, or help.

jakob, I'm impressed if you put up that page in response to my post. I'm also impressed if you were already doing it. So much so that it galvanized me to join an pay my 25E support contribution. I will watch this space with great interest!

Patrick

PS You realize that once this is up and running people will start asking for msm alerts on passing latitude X or wind backing more than Y!!!

Also think it's a very wise commercial decision to have this as a members only feature.
Thank you Pipedream! Yes, some nice alerts would be great. If you have intelligent ideas on how to design them please let me know.

Jakob,
I don't know any details of your database but I would imagine you will need a new alerts table or add some fields to the stored steering instructions table. I would have thought it was sufficient to store (as well as boat_id, race_id etc):

degrees
minutes
action to sms if
1. N of this lat
2. S of this lat
3. W of this long
4. E of this long
5. TWD < this bearing
6 TWD > this bearing

The TWD options would be triggered by the TWD falling into the bearing +/- 180 degrees.

You would probably want the entries to lapse from the table after 24 hours.

If you use an email to text service like textmagic then you will have to pay and I'm not sure how you would administer this but you would probably need a counter on the user table (as well as mobile number).

I think the stripped down form needs:
speed
TWS
TWA
TWD
course
then steeing input fields:
compass course
true wind angle
delay command
(you don't need the radio buttons just test whether the fields have been set)
then the set alerts fields mentioned above
then a list of stored instructions and alerts with checkboxes to allow deletion

Finally, your webpage was ok with phones that can cope with html but not for wml type phones. I don't know if you want to bother with this at this stage.

Patrick
Great work on this interface! It seems to do everything as expected with IE7 but the +/- map buttons cause the map to disappear (eventually) in Firefox and on a Nokia phone it seems to go back to log on screen. If I shut down and restart Firefox map reappears but not if I just log off sailonline.org. I can get back into my boat control without entering password if I select from the history of miniclient urls with a userid number.

However, as I said above, quite usable as it is for emergencies!

The improvements in the last days for the the mobile client I realy like.

A super zoom (128x) for the buoys or finish line would be great.
VMG is missing.
Maybe a weather forcast for 4h
W 5m/s --> WSW 7.5m/s = W- +2.5
W 5m/s --> NW 3.3m/s = W++ -1.7

Thank you
Brilliant ideas, thank you!
We will consider an likely implement.
