SOLer Sunrunner from Canada has designed a race for us, around the islands in the Gulf of St Lawrence - the biggest of which is Newfoundland.

To see it,log in as the sol boat (Username: sol Password: sol) and go to this url:

http://www.sailonline.org/windy/run/360/

The race is pretty complete as it is, but please do post here if you see any technical or other issues with it.

This link will remain valid for about a week, after this the race will be archived until it is run in June.

Only one request. A Swan is a very comfortable boat IRL, but maybe something with a bit more speed than less than 8 kts top speed.
Now if we want a Swan, How about this one: http://www.nautorswan.com/swanlineproducts/tabid/295/SwanLine/80/boatId/27/boatVersionId/55/Default.aspx

Nice race, only some minor questions regarding the marks.

- should the belle ile mark and the SE mark be on land or are they intentionally offshore?

-with island markers in the middle of the island ranking will go up and down wilst passing these marks, if shifted to the outer point ,close to the courseline, the effect wil be less. It might save you a lot of questions/remarks about shifting rankings.

Kees(Tempest)
Agree with Tempest on both points. That might make it a bit cleaner. I also like the Swan80... do we have a polar for that? Should be a fun week race! Well done!
Tempest - those two marks are deliberately offshore :-)

Thanks for checking!

Captjack and ShamPir - at the moment we only have the polar for the Swan 36 which is why, I believe, Sunrunner chose it.

Do you have a polar/polar diagram for a Swan 80?? If not, let us know and we will hunt one down!!

Hi All,
One other consideration... with the existing polar, at max wind speed and optimum boat speed/angle, the race will still take well over a week to complete. Would this be considered in the ocean series or the week series given times and distance?
Thank you all Solers for your interest, comments and suggestions in my race proposal departing from Bathurst, NB, Canada whick is my homeport.
Sunrunner
Looks like a nice race.
Several SOLers logged in as themselves rather than the SOL boat. These boats will now be de-activated and any further review of this course must be done as the sol boat.

Simply login by using the following:

usernamr: sol

password: sol

and use the link in my first post!!

Thanks all for comments/ideas thus far!
Does anyone have the polar or polar diagram for the Swan 80 please?

If so, please shout out!!

This race preview is now closed until the new polar is in place.

Red Eye - Hobart Convict Run 2026

Back in 2010, one of our SOLers of the first hour, AUS_Scott76, came up with this ‘Convict Run’ out from Hobart, past Cape Raoul and the penal colony of Port Arthur, round Tasman Island, up and back down the east coast of Tasmania, to finish with a tight technical run – so Scott called it – up the picturesque D'entrecasteaux Channel, home to Hobart once again. It’s 250nm, ideal for a bit of ‘Red Eye’ in comfortable Finngulf 43’s, and if the original idea was to pick up some convicts on the way for a bit of R&R and sea air, you may always drop’m back before returning to Hobart!

New Ice Age 2026 - Longyearbyen to Browerville

Although we have by no means exhausted the possibilities of ice boating on lakes at high latitudes or high altitudes, it was noticeable that as our 2025 Series progressed, there were calls from time to time for longer-distance challenges, and so in response to these calls we will pretend that global warming has reversed and as a result the coastal waters of Antarctica and Russia and Canada have fully (and smoothly!) frozen over offering us the possibility of a 4-race New Ice Age series in our trusted no-PL DN machines. Our first leg takes us 2600nm from Svalbard’s Longyearbyen east to North Alaska’s Browerville. You’ll be a few days on the ice, so dress warmly and take some provisions; go!

Cross the Convergence 2026 - Robinson Crusoe to Galapagos

Welcome to our first race of a new series of ocean voyages across the World’s convergence zones, this first race taking you north from south of the Tropic of Capricorn to the Equator-straddling Galapagos, home of magical iguanas and other exotic fauna (but no mythical kings, Dory) Departing from the island where in 1704 adventurer Alexander Selkirk inspired Daniel Defoe to write the best-seller "The Life and Adventures of Robinson Crusoe", by debarking off the unsound "HMS Cinque Ports", four months before she foundered off the coast of present-day Colombia, we will sail the 2200nm in our decidedly sounder and faster than the " Cinque Ports",
