Thoughts from the back-of-the-pack:

Having only been here several months, I hesitate to jump in but this is a terrific discussion with a variety of perspectives all seeking the same end-point; namely, how to keep this simulation (I still can't bring myself to call it a "game") fresh and engaging. As in all endeavours, the ability to evolve is essential to avoid stagnation and death. I have experienced this in my professional, personal and business life and it is rather Darwinian in essence. Since I am new enough to SOL, it still holds enormous challenge and fun and fills most of my non-work hours (and a few of the work one's as well... please don't tell my employer!!!)

I particular liked the post by Jawz:
Finally. I made a suggestion once that we should expand the icons on the client to include such things as;

Deckhand - Novice sailor
Skipper - Member that is in the top 100 ranking.
Master Mariner - Top 10 ranking sailor

Add to this another icon indicating Router/Non Router.

Add to this another set of icons indicating for example - races completed. This shows the "Age" of each Sol sailor.

Based on this icon we could "click" on the client page to see who is leading the various categories. Just as we can now group the various nations in the client.

I feel that this might go a small way to resolve our sailors requirement to see how well they are doing. This would also add further user appeal to all newcomers.

I find all of these options quite appealing- though I prefer my own nomenclature for the ranks as
Pro, Performance, and Recreational- and would add two other suggestions to keep things fresh.

1) Along with the divisions, perhaps add a few more chatrooms linked to the Divisions. I have peeked into several of them and by far the busiest are English and Italiano. This might allow more interactions for the fleet. The primary chatroom can get very busy and may intimidating for newbies (obviously not me, sorry!!)

2) I would also enjoy an expanded "Profile" page to let interested SOLers add a bit more to their name and e-mail. This then becomes something of a networking tool (hate that term) and would flesh out the boats/persona's we spend so much time competing with.

This is all IMHO.
Best to all,
SP
Was just poking around in the forum and got caught up in in this thread. Seemed a good idea to float it back to the top. ;-)

Tall Ships Races 2025 - Le Havre to Dunkirk

Welcome to the first of four virtual Tall Ships Races in European waters which are concurrently being organized in-real-life by Sail Training International . The course for this first race is between the French ports of Le Havre and Dunkirk; circa 125nm in Sailonline’s magnificent 90m Barque.
NOTE: Starts and Finishes in tall ships racing are always offshore to avoid conflict with shipping and shipping lanes; online and real-life may not match exactly.

Red Eye - Key Lime Pie-gatta 2025

Opposite the Bahamas at the tip of the Florida peninsula, we find the Florida Keys, a honky-tonk arpeggio of islands, where another SOL classic, the Key Lime Pie-gatta, so-called after the famous local condensed-milk-based tart speciality, awaits to be navigated once again. We’ll race its “Red Eye” 180nm in very-American Santa Cruz 52s, ignoring such artefacts as bridges, causeways and piers joining the keys one to the other and to the mainland!

Sail Around Turkey 2025

Welcome to the 11th running of one of Sailonline's most iconic races, where our fleet races the length of the Turkish coastline from Hopa (the easternmost harbour on Turkey’s Black Sea coast) to Iskenderun (the easternmost harbour on Turkey’s Mediterranean coast). It’s a 1,372nm race and aboard our classic, 1st decade of the 21st Century, version 2 IMOCA 60, you should be able to get around the course in less than a week. That is if, of course, once you get out of the Black Sea you don’t stop to enjoy the sights or a BBQ or two in the Golden Horn, or on the Marble Islands, now land-locked Troy or Gallipoli or any of the myriad Aegean islands, that you shall have to carefully navigate past.
