For Our Dear Friend

He was a SOLer of high pedigree
He took to our hearts, if not to the sea
His daily routine we all knew quite well
From oceans away, his presence we’d feel
An emptiness now shall blanket the fleet
A crewmate of SOLers has gone to his sleep
The Dog-Watch has earned a new meaning this day
From now, for all time, it shall mean “Mr.K”

With deepest sympathy,

SP
Deepest condolences RC...

So sad to hear RC :(
ShamPir - thank you so very much for your poem for Mr K! I am stunned (and happy) that you wrote it. T'will be copied and pasted for sure!

Mr K was pts on Monday evening, here at home.

Over the past week he had gone from "just" old, deaf, blind and walking stiffly to having his back legs collapsing. Finally, on Monday, after a very very brief morning walk he totally refused food and water and spent most of the day prostrated on one of his beds.

Mid afternoon, when usually K would tactically sneeze, stretch and generally announce to the world that it was arvo dog-walk time, he was still flat in his bed. Breathing calmly but very flat and not very with it.

I then realised that the time had come for me to release K from his duties of supervising me and called Brian the Oz Vet who said he would come out after office hours (he and I had pre-arranged this a while ago).

Just before Brian arrived, Mr K did let me hand feed him a couple of morsels of freshly prepared chicken but still didn't want any water...it was clearly time for him to go.

My heart is breaking but my head tells me I did the right thing.

Attached is a wee memorial I wrote to celebrate his life and here is a link to Mr K's blog which starts with the memorial but has other pics too.

K's Brief Bio

P.S. If anyone thinks it is inappropriate for me to hog SOL bandwidth with this, please do let me know and I will then lock this thread.

Hey RC my friend!!

No, you carry on. Reading your blog and your post here had both Arlene and I in tears at your grief.

All our love

George and Arlene
Hi RC,
I wish you all the best in dealing with this great loss. My wife and I know how your mindset is today, we had a couple of years ago the same issue with our dog, which is 4 months ago replaced by another great puppy ;)
RIP mr K and lovely thoughts for you RC!

I am so sorry to hear about Mr K. Its a great loss, Some how PRs won't be quite the same without him. Mr K will live on in many SOLers memorys.
Dear RainbowChaser,

I am sorry for your loss.
Love your blog and pictures.
You'll have sweet memories of Mr.K.

Warm hug,
Antonio
RC, very sorry for your loss of beloved Mr.K.

Don't wait long and buy yourself a new young dog.Maybe even better adopt one from dog shelter as that would probably like Mr.K. from heavens.

Damir
sorry!!!

Lago Viedma Ice Race 2025

Less than one third of the land mass of the planet is to be found in the southern hemisphere, and most of that in tropical to temperate latitudes or in Antarctica, so it is difficult to find good natural ice to race DNs anywhere in August! However, if you take an internal flight from Buenos Aires to Aeropuerto Internacional Comandante Armando Tola de El Calafate by the shores of Lago Argentino, it’s only a 100km taxi ride to Lago Viedma, where we have set out a few beacons on the ice for you for a quick 80nm blast around the four corners of the lake, and as it’s so remote here, no need to worry about breaking the solitude of monks or suffering PL!

Sinbad by Balloon 2025 - Baia de l'Oiseau to Carnarvon

How ever shall I return to report with clarity to my Great Sultan – asked Sinbad. It needs be told this island and all its fables shall be expunged from the annals of every thousand and one night. The wind howls – and sun be none (it’s Winter, Sin’bro, ed.) – and all days from the west, but let’s launch anyway and see if we can work our SOL Balloon north as the days pass aiming for Asthralaya, where The Mahabharata tells the ancients once tested mighty weapons, about a quarter and a million qasbah away (2500nm, ed.), perhaps one month.
