Does anyone use the ipad for their SOL adventures? I'm thinking of getting one but it has to be good for SOL. Do any of the ad ons or other useful sailing tools work on the ipad? I only use the laptop at the moment which means I have periods of no SOL when travelling.
Hi Scotsman!

The only problem with SOLing on an iPad is the lack of Flash support on all Apple idevices. But theres a way around it...you have to download the Puffin web browser. It converts Flash to html5 beautifully and I play SOL on my iPhone with it. It takes a little getting used to, but it works.

Cheers,

Antonio
I have been trying Puffin on my NEW i-Pad, and found so far that my boat position remains at screen centre and cannot be varied. Is this others experience?
If it breaks, it's not strong enough--if it doesn't, it's too heavy.
I also found I couldn't alter course using the 'steering' icon-no pink line appeared. I could use the measuring tool, but slowly, with 10-20 second delays.
If it breaks, it's not strong enough--if it doesn't, it's too heavy.
I had a go at using my father in law's ipad / puffin and found the following, based on a fairly quick trial (so there may be ways around this):

- Not able to pan the screen (usually done by holding down the mouse, which isn't available on ipad.
- Can sort of pan by clicking the names of other boats, which does allow some sort of panning.
- Not able to change from weekly weather slide to 24hrs (requires alt mouse click).
- Most forms of fine tuning very difficult or impossible.
- Not sure how to alter course, as I wasn't able to use the command function, either using the steer tool or the steer tab. Perhaps mobile client is better for this.
- Ruler or similar planning on the screen seemed to be difficult or impossible.

So based on all that, I've decided not to bother with buying an ipad.

The main benefit seemed to be that you can see the weather and the forecast, which I understand is not available on mobile client (which I haven't used yet).

Cheers, Kevin
I have found that I cannot steer in VORG or GORG, but can do everything else.
In SOL, I have found out how to steer as well.
Tap the wheel icon, tap the screen where you wish to go, the course appears in COG and TWA boxes, then tap the 'send command' button. It is slow, so don't be impatient, it only confuses the poor little thing.
ps. I will continue with the VORG and the GORG.

Red Eye - Myth of Malham 2025

In 1947, Hugh McLean & Sons of Gourock, Scotland built a radical racing yacht for John Illingworth, soon-to-be Commodore of the RORC, to a design by Laurent Giles. With a masthead rig, giving her ‘free’ sail area per the rules of the time, and short overhangs reducing pitching, Myth of Malham went on to win The Fastnet that year and again in 1949, and to compete in numerous Admiral's Cups. In 1958, in honour of the yacht, the Myth of Malham race was conceived - a mini-Fastnet to the first lighthouse on a rock west of Cowes, Eddystone, rather than the second, to be held in non-Fastnet years. IRL this year it has been raced already, but this stops us not from “Red Eye” racing its online 230nm in Fareast 31Rs, leaving how to deal with the Isle of Wight open to your own discretion.

Africa by Sea 2025 - Maputo to Mogadishu

The fifth leg of our exploration of Africa By Sea takes us north along the length of the Continent’s succulent sub-tropical and tropical Indian Ocean coast. Much fought over by traders and colonists both well-before and after a Portuguese expedition under the command of Vasco da Gama first sailed there from Europe back in the 16th century, it is yet to be properly explored as a yachting destination. With plenty of islands off- and inshore, small and very large, there is much to interrupt your 1900nm voyage and visit in your Swan 65, from Maputo to Mogadishu! Race #1858
