Hi all

SOL is buddying up with Fjordsailing for the return to Bergen from Lerwick on 24 June in this year's Shetland Races series.

I have been given the following information relating to lat/lon coordinates but they are not in a form I recognised. My contact at fjordsailing just grabbed them from his (Norwegian) Google Earth so....

Please would someone "translate" these coords into Decimal Degrees for me.

In the UK we conventionally use Decimal Degrees, Degrees+Decimal Minutes and Degrees+Minutes+Seconds!

here is what I got:

QUOTE
Start Lerwick N60.09.15.43 W01.07.55.52 - You have to cross the line North to South and use the South entrance to the harbour as you depart.
Finishpoint in Korsfjorden due north of Marstein Lighthouse is N60.08.47.41 E05.00.30.86
UNQUOTE

I did try looking for Korsfjorden in Norway in GE but a location in the far north and not S of Bergen!!!

Takk! Thank you in advance!

60.15428611, -1.132088889
60.14650278, 5.008572222

They are in Deg, Min, Sec, decimal of sec. Do you have their SIs? We can check if these positions make sense.

The lighthouse is at the entrance of the fjord to the south of Bergen. Found it on google maps.
Hi Scotsman - thank you so much for your help! I was going crosseyed this morning trying to work it out.

No I don't have their sailing instructions - just the info I quoted in my original post.

The race is linked from the Fjordsailing website.

The Shetland Races start from two centers in Norway this weekend - 'cos its relatively a last minute buddy-up, SOL is just racing one of the two return races from Shetland (Lerwick to Bergen).

Would you have a look at the race website and tell me which of SOL's 40ft yachts would sail best here, based on the entry list.

The organisers have said "a 40-footer" but it would be nice to make it a competitive one. At the mo I have gone with the Linjett 40 but not sure if that is the best choice.

I've had a bit of a look around and a linjett 40 should be mid fleet.

If we want something to keep up with the leaders we will need something a bit faster, like the first 47.
Hi Scotsman - thank you very much for your help.

As most of the SOL fleet will end up in the middle anyway, I think we should give our top SOLers a chance to shine so the First 47.7 it will be!! SOL does now have a polar for the First 44.7 but I think we might need the extra 3' ??!!

Port Huron to Mackinac 2025

First run in 1925, the race from Huron to Mackinac is considered to be the world's longest consecutively run freshwater sailing race. Let's go - 260nm in X-362 Sport's awaits!!
Throw away unnecessary ballast from your boats. Fresh water has less buoyancy, which means greater draft and greater resistance to movement, which means lower speeds, etc.😊

Sinbad by Balloon 2025 - Carnarvon to Dondra

From here, our home in Bharatavarṣa is now north west of us – said Sinbad to his fellow balloonists. Perhaps we can ride the wind first further north, and then catch the winds that every year bring the rain, perhaps not. It’s 2600nm and we could be aloft awhile, so, Master el-Quarters, victuals only, no sandbags, provisioning the giant hamper. It will be not a picnic!
