Like the sound of this - please just keep in mind starting under DC etc. tacking down the river may be a bit off-putting for guys in the other time zones
regards
Yeah the start is a doozy. One of the Class 40s last race counted 52 tacks in the first 210nm. Think of how good it would feel when it stops :-D

It's important that everyone have fun.

On the other hand, the river section should take 3 days or so, so it's pretty equal opportunity in terms of time zones. I just ran routing using current conditions and almost the whole run out to the gulf is an easy broad reach. Typically, only one shoreline would really come into play, so the sense of constriction is a bit deceptive - in practice not *so* much different than tacking along an open coastline.

RC, confirmed that the real race in 2008 did start at 12:00 local.
Sorry 76T, just home etc. I accept what you say, especially "have fun" - strange, the rest of the fleet are silent?
my 9c worth - prefer Rumb line to positions
Looking forward to this one!
Oops, must have crossed the"decorum" line

Just giving the others a chance to chip in ;-)

In the real race the purpose of the six buoys is to ensure that the boats pass close to six towns along the river. This is to create spectator events in the towns. The last of these town/buoys is Percé. There are no marks on the south of Newfoundland.

Why do we have here only two marks along the south bank of the river, which tend to force us away from the shore? Why are there also two marks on the south of Newfoundland?
Thanks Jack!

The six marks are a bit of a puzzle to me, and if anyone can dig up extra info it would be great! I read it the same way you do - and rounding marks to force the boats close to shore is certainly the way I'd set up the irl course, but the language is a bit vague. The only "buoy" that seems to have been used as a shore-gate in the past was at Rimouski - the tracks in 2008 skip the others.

The SOL rounding scheme introduces some extra complications (we could do close-to-shore roundings at Malbaie, Gaspé and Percé but not Matane or Ste Anne). Currently the two towns shown just refine the rhumbline/ranking in the SOL client without restricting the course.

We can modify the course within the limits of SOL's rules. The trade-off I guess is a little bit easier vs more accurate. One day we'll be able to set up gates properly.

The marks south of Newfoundland are the (France) French islands of St Pierre and Miquelon. The fleet passes between them.

Found map here that shows going between the islands south of Newfoundland:
the race
(it also shows, I think, the multihull route going up to the Irish Coast to leave Fastnet Is. to Starboard)
Of course the same page says that the boats are allowed to only carry 3 liters of drinking water per person for the estimated duration of the race. I assume someone misread the rules, and in actuality, the requirement is 3 liters per day per crew member for the estimated duration of the race.

New Ice Age 2026 - Browerville to Longyearbyen

Our 2026 long-distance ice-boating challenge continues with a second race in Arctic waters, now from Browerville, where we arrived less than a month ago, continuing east, back to Svalbard’s Longyearbyen, leaving Canada’s Ellesmere Island to port and Denmark’s Greenland to starboard. It’s about 2500nm, which, if there’s wind at all, should, well-wrapped in your DN-cockpits, not take you more than a day or three, thus to complete your first (of several) online circumnavigation of the planet of 2026!

Beketov by Balloon 2026 - In Siberia

Way-back-when France and England, and Spain as well, were squabbling about who should control what of North America, only to lose the most of it to their own insurging colonists, their eastern European neighbour empire, Russia, was quietly assimilating vast, thinly nomadically populated territory of its own – Siberia! Amongst the many explorers and adventurers that served Russia so well in these conquests was the Cossack hetman Pyotr Beketov. Let’s pretend we’re he and eschewing horseback, let’s travel by balloon from Yekaterinberg to Krasnoyarsk – just a short 2000km (1100nm) section of the Trans-Siberian Express’ 9289km!

West Papua to Oregon 2026

Our next race in our Ocean Championships is the first of a series of great natural migrations we will track in 2026. The leatherback turtle is the most widely distributed marine reptile on planet Earth, and chooses to breed in warm tropical waters, but prefers to forage in more temperate habitats, travelling thousands and thousands of miles effortlessly annually to maintain this way of life. Our race will follow one of the typical trips of this turtle, from breeding grounds in the seas off West Papua to the coast of Oregon. It’s only 5900nm, so to keep up, but in comfort, we’ll follow in our Gunboat 90.
