I will share some impressions to help newcomers to get the best out of SOL. I try to learn from the best and I am still way behind though :) I hope someone will share theirs too in this thread can become useful for new sailors.

    The importance of SPRINT races

The peculiarities of these regattas are numerous: once you have the necessary knowledge, in these races you can start putting it into practice and see the results immediately. Additionally, you can thoroughly study wind data and analyze the routes of opposing boats in a confined space, comparing them with your own, make decisions, and almost instantly visualize the outcomes. Of particular importance is the analysis of wind direction in relation to its intensity, which helps determine the strategy to adopt. The limited duration means that the boats are always very close, and small corrections yield immediate results, facilitating understanding. Consistent application makes this learning process time-intensive, but with a couple of hours available, you can conduct an in-depth and continuous analysis of the strategies and tactics employed at sea, both your own and those of opposing boats. As a final note, routers in these regattas have limited importance; they are generally difficult to use due to obstacles or overly complex routes, providing only a rough indication with very limited value. Participating in these races to learn from the best is, in my opinion, a very effective and quick way to progress and become passionate about SOL.

I sailed 1,000 miles off track,
Thought I'd gain a winning hack.
The East looked slow, the middle cursed —
So I just YOLO’d to the worst.

Now here I sit — same spot, no breeze,
With zero clue and aching knees.
Tactics? LOL. I'm just a guest...
In Neptune’s game of “Screw the Rest.” 🎲

Hard to say best way to play
Keep the faith, and go straight

If that will not, just practice some knots

The Vineyard Race 2025

For the first time since first hosting a virtual Vineyard in cooperation with Long Island's Stamford Yacht Club back in 2010, due to an operational calendaring error, Sailonline has missed the start of the real life race, the USA’s Labor Day weekend this year unusually falling across the turn of August. Silly SOL! So, a week late please join us anyway for a virtual rerun of Stamford’s iconic annual overnighter from their club line out the sound to Buzzard's Bay Light near Martha's Vineyard Island and back again, leaving Block Island to starboard. This year, Sailonline is making its magic MC 38 available to competitors, a race boat with a quirky polar that will require you to stay wide awake as you speed around the c 250 nm course, in rockstar style!
