Commentary
It isn’t often that Sailonline races any Tall Ship away from Europe – although we have in the past ventured as far afield as Australia – so the two races for Sailonline’s Class B Tall Ship in the China Sea is something special. A part of the world that has relied on trading since humanity first arrived there, the arrival of the first European ships merely added to an already existing busy shipping environment. Amid the more exotic craft, designed for the China Sea and its ports, our Class B Tall Ship would then and did now have it’s work cut out to meet the challenges of wind and sea. There was no way that anyone racing could not have appreciated just how essential it is to understand local conditions – some among us headed E in the hope of finding more favourable winds, while others kept close to the racing line. A few, of course, chose to steer relatively contrary courses but, it is fair to say, that everyone who made it to Pulau Netuna Besar was very relieved to be there!

Congratulations and accolades to our podium three who found the speediest way to the finish – very nicely done, indeed!

Natuna Sea Race 2026


At 4.0N 108.2E lies the island of Natuna Besar, Great Natuna, surrounded by at least 154 islands, of which 127 uninhabited, Indonesia’s Natuna Regency, and all around this archipelago, the Natuna Sea, bordered by Borneo to the east, the Java Sea to the south, and the Malay peninsula to the west, and extending north to cross a disputed international border with China into the South China Sea. And it’s a border that matters, there’s gas here! But why worry, let’s race – 2050nm in our goo’ol’ Open 60s in between the production platforms, prowling destroyers and submarines.

Panama Canal 2026


Sailing in the Panama Canal isn't the best idea, and organizing a race there is simply impossible and unfeasible IRL. In SOL, we have slightly different rules, so why not? A 36nm, frantic race awaits us, and the fast Dehler 30 OD will help us navigate the Panama Canal with grace.

Tasman Double 2025 - Hobart to Sydney

With Hobart astern and celebrations behind them, the fleet turns north for Leg 2 of our Tasman Double Series. Over 625 nautical miles, our SOLers aboard their mighty Super Maxi 100v2s return to the Tasman Sea, where shifting weather, demanding seas, and nonstop decisions shape every mile. The race back to Sydney rewards those who read the conditions best, manage their speed wisely, and stay focused until the final approach.

Welcome to South Africa and RCYC's classic transatlantic Cape2Rio Race from Cape Town, South Africa, to Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. First run in 1971, this run is buddied with the IRL, Cape2Rio 2025 arranged by the Royal Cape Yacht Club with the cooperation of the
Iate Clube do Rio de Janeiro Despite this being announced the 2025 race (starting dec. 27) it is the 2026 SOL championship kickoff. This virtual version, will be raced once again in Mark Mills' 74ft speedster, the stunning C2R74.
