The overall popular winner is the 60ft tri.

Thank you to everyone contributing - the aim is that we sail relatively competitively with the real fleet and, for a change, sail a multi rather than a monohull.

Look out for race info to appear shortly!
Welcome to the 2013 PIC Insurance Brokers Coastal Classic Yacht Race

Thirty two years ago a member of the Auckland Multihull Sailing Association had the idea of racing from the Devonport/Orakei area of Auckland's harbour up the east coast of New Zealand's North Island, to the harbour of Russell, following in the wakes of the speedboats of the 1920s, who ran this course aiming to set speed records. Since then the race from Auckland to Russell has become known the world over as the Coastal Classic. Originally an all-comers event, it is now raced in classes with a wide range of prizes on offer - for division winners, for seamanship and even for the littlest boat finishing.

Sailonline is delighted to again host the virtual version of this New Zealand classic race - racing in 60ft trimarans we hope to give the real racers a challenge.

Results and Race Report

This has to have been the speediest run from Auckland to Russell in the history of SOL - our racing 60ft trimarans certainly had something to do with it, but also the winds were stronger than we have encountered here in the past. Starting with only a few preferring to bbq than race, the fleet of virtual boats were soon at the front of the combined real and virtual pack with only TeamAustralia and TeamVodaphoneSailing noticeably pulling away!

The first 20 virtual boats out of a total registered fleet of 284 flying 39 different national flags, arrived in Russell within 10 minutes of each other, in just over 11 hours. Their race seemed timed to perfection, as it was at this point that the relatively strong NW winds began to ease and become less stable.

In the real race the two record-breaking contenders didn't break any records although TeamAustralia arrived at the finish in just over 8hrs and TeamVodafoneSailing arrived in just under 9hrs. As Sailonline has yet to develop foils for her tri, the real results should in no way detract from the excellent podium places for our top three racers - full focus, fine-course adjustments and complete attention to the slightest of wind changes is what brought success here. BRAVO guys!

Lake Ontario 300 Challenge 2026

Lake Ontario Offshore Racing (LOOR) welcomes Sailonline sailors to a second virtual version of a race in their annual series, and for the sixth year in succession the LO300. As the name implies, the LO300 is a 300nm offshore race across the length and breadth of Lake Ontario, from and back to Port Credit YC. This year, for the first time, we will be racing the 300nm circuit in Sun Fast 3200s. As usual, there is an overall prize for the SOLer who best bosses Lake Ontario over the two races hosted by Sailonline, this LO300 and the Susan Hood raced back in May, and this year also the race and the Susan Hood count towards the title of Super Buddy 2026; so, let the competition be fierce!

Cross the Convergence 2026 - Sao Tomé to Tristan

The fifth race of our series of ocean voyages across the World’s convergence zones takes us back south down the Atlantic from Sao Tomé on the Equator to Tristan da Cunha on the edge of the Roaring Forties. It’s 2500nm; in your path the Benguela winds and current along the south west African coast, and behind that the St Helena High stretching halfway to South America. So, mind where you go in your Volvo OD65 version 3 (based on sampled real-life race data by kroppyer)!

New Ice Age 2026 - Neumayer Station to Scott Base

For a second-half of long-distance ice-boating, we take our DNs to Antarctica for a circumnavigation of that continent in two legs clockwise, in harmony with the prevailing winds (such as there are), beginning with a race from Germany’s Neumayer Station to New Zealand’s Scott Base. It’s about 3500nm, which, if there’s wind at all, should, well-wrapped in your DN-cockpits, not take you much more than five days. And remember: charts down here are unreliable – what is land and what is ice?!
