THE 2017 SOL CHAMPIONSHIP NORs
________________________________________

Whilst the OCEAN and TIMED Championships carry same format as in 2016, let us introduce you to the new formats :

SPRINT CHAMPIONSHIP
It will be run in three Regional rounds of six races each over four months each to reflect the Winter(ish) seasons where our Community lives. During the first 4 months only start times good for the Americas , will be followed by another 4 months of Regional Australasia ( six races at their times) and lastly Europe and Africa. The race courses will not necessarily be in the Regions, but as we know at SOL we enjoy teleportation ( free and fast ).Each Regional will have prizes , and the 2017 SPRINT Championship will be the summa of the three Regionals. ALL Solers will of course race all 18 Sprint races for the annual SPRCH rankings and prizes.

40 footer Q1&Q2 CHAMPIONSHIP

This will be great fun! Like in the old days of the annual IMSYC ( for those who remember ) , during EACH of six races ( three in each quarter in Q1 and Q2 ) skippers will be able to choose one of three 40ft polars , and will compete against others with different choice. During the Championship skippers MUST race with same polar no more than TWICE . The NOR carries all the details , and, due to the peculiarity of this Championship , we are also hereunder providing translation in some languages other than English for that part of the NOR that is essential to fully understand the mechanicals. We also provide hereunder a link to the three polars , for you to inspect and study ahead of each race , so to be able to make the right choice each time.
If successful this formula may be replicated in Q3 and Q4… Have FUN !!

SUPERSOLER 2017

This year will be the summa of 38 Championship races ( 8 OCCH + 12 TRCH + 18 SPRCH ) and will allow 5 discards.

Happy Championships SOLing in 2017 !

The 40ft Championship that just concluded after six races during the first half of 2017 has been a success from a number of aspects , raising the level of pre-planning needed to compete effectively in each leg .

As consequence of such success a new 40ft Championship has been planned for the second half of the year.

The new NOR that can be found hereunder tells about a couple of changes :

1) As requested by great majority of SOLers SRC has provided an indication of the three venues where legs 4 , 5 and 6 will be run in the 4th quarter.

2) At the end of each race there has been always till now a number of boats who did not observe the “polar utilization rule “ ( max twice in the six races series ) , resulting in a sizeable number of disqualifications. SRC has decided that during the new Championship only the TOP 50 FINISHERS in each race will be checked for compliance with the boat selection rule . Those who want to compete for top spots will therefore need to comply at all times . Non-compliance will be triggering disqualification as before .

Happy SOLing in Q3 and Q4 !! ;)

Red Eye - Myth of Malham 2025

In 1947, Hugh McLean & Sons of Gourock, Scotland built a radical racing yacht for John Illingworth, soon-to-be Commodore of the RORC, to a design by Laurent Giles. With a masthead rig, giving her ‘free’ sail area per the rules of the time, and short overhangs reducing pitching, Myth of Malham went on to win The Fastnet that year and again in 1949, and to compete in numerous Admiral's Cups. In 1958, in honour of the yacht, the Myth of Malham race was conceived - a mini-Fastnet to the first lighthouse on a rock west of Cowes, Eddystone, rather than the second, to be held in non-Fastnet years. IRL this year it has been raced already, but this stops us not from “Red Eye” racing its online 230nm in Fareast 31Rs, leaving how to deal with the Isle of Wight open to your own discretion.

Africa by Sea 2025 - Maputo to Mogadishu

The fifth leg of our exploration of Africa By Sea takes us north along the length of the Continent’s succulent sub-tropical and tropical Indian Ocean coast. Much fought over by traders and colonists both well-before and after a Portuguese expedition under the command of Vasco da Gama first sailed there from Europe back in the 16th century, it is yet to be properly explored as a yachting destination. With plenty of islands off- and inshore, small and very large, there is much to interrupt your 1900nm voyage and visit in your Swan 65, from Maputo to Mogadishu! Race #1858
