Paul !!
I agree with you that sailing in SOL with a WX that perfectly matches the IRL situation would be wonderful.
Unfortunatly though the vast majority of us , when consulting gribs and local forecasts of all kinds tend to forget that the ONLY wx our little pinky boats sail under is the SOL one in each single moment rendered by the server through the client....
.
My point when starting this thread was that staring at a pc waiting for 6 hours for a delayed scheduled new wx release is taking away one of the best features of " SOL manageability " .....so :
no sailing under delayed false wx .....just sailing under false wx waiting for too long delayed update of a false new one ..
I agree that looking at an irl forecast ahead of the sol update might be VERY useful to anticipate following strategies ....but ONLY on one simple condition : that the SOL update will reflect it !!!

- BALTIC WX UPDATES

Ciao all
during yesterday' St.Petersburg race we experienced the following "delays" in baltic wx updates :
0830 - 4,5 hours late
2030 - 6 hours late
I would like to suggest adoption of the Noaa updates for baltic races as well, even at cost of less precision in matching reality.
Ability of planning pc attendance is one of best features of sol, and baltic updates are presently incompatible with that

Philip
you are perfectly right ....Petr is with us since end of 2008 actually ...the information is on this very page .......
Perhaps my contribution was for those who were'nt and may not understand this subject.
I still believe that sol should go back to previous situation whereby correct rounding was reinforced by server , to go back to sail racing simulation.

I agree with you . The new rules for rounding that have been created and enforced since about one year ago should have returned to Petr a " not rounded " as soon as he crossed back the line extending from the waypoint , and his distance from finish should have started to increase rather than decrease.
It is the second time in recent weeks that the rounding rule re-inforcement by the server fails to trigger , and I wonder if something that was in place before slipped through the recent upgrades to the game ..... it will be very easy for our SOL engineers to rectify though ....and this is why I commented to your point : to double up your effort to attract attention to this fault.

- Re: Length of Finish Lines
- Board » General Discussion
-
Ciao ALL ....
RC asked me in chat to comment on this therad , and I am about to do it with pleasure , in hope to contribute to SOL in a constructive manner :
How long a finish line should be IS NOT THE ISSUE : SOL constraints both on departure mechanicals and on finish lines do not allow to replicate properly IRL . Departure is self explanatory ; as to finish , think for example to the fact that in SOL one can cross the line in either direction . That is NOT IRL for sure . The lenght of the finish line can be whatever , and whatever will be , it will constitute , as always in SOL, the last option as to best tactical choice of where to cross it.
The issue is : CHANGES to the race rules or course DURING the race .
IRL race committees do change things DURING a race , but with the following TWO MAJOR GOLDEN RULES in mind :
1) a change of rule MUST NOT favor some at cost of others .
One good example was the delaying of closure of the Texel timed race . That gave some boats able to re-start an advantage that others still on the track could not have . Simple solution would be to automate the closure time ( being performed by server as per set NOR rule )
2) A change of course ( waypoint ....finish line....etc ) can only take place if NO ONE BOAT has entered the leg where the change occurs AND provided ALL boats can be informed of the change without any chance of doubt . In case of last night finish line the change could be done prior to me passing the last waypoint , and having in place a system that tells ALL boats about the change . ( idea : something similar to the brand new AG whistle of new wx arrived ??? )
3) in case of doubt about 1 AND 2 being adhered to .....CHANGE NOTHING !!!!!
was it a valuable contribution ?
ciao ....and remember .....nowdays without your 105% commitment and dedication to SOL operational handling , there would not be a lot of fun in SOL as there is .......( matter of facts ....not just only recognition ) ..
Ciao

Rod....
As you have laid on the table "argomentum ad absurdum "
..and I am fluent in Latin , I feel the duty to contribute my opinion to your queries , and I in bona fide believe that many Solers interprete the rules same way as I do :
1) the rule is "one skipper one boat" ..NOT one boat one skipper " ( quite different )
2) Syndicates ( consortiums ) have been declared legal by Sailport ( one boat multiple skippers )
3) boatsitting requires clarification ( agree with AGage ). To me it has always meant : "I will not be able to be at helm from such hour till such hour..please can you keep an eye on my boat to avoid any rocks..?? " When I know that I cannot be at helm at least 90/95% of a race time , then I do not start my boat .
4) Sailport has not declared illegal any software so far. Besides Sailport proposes Sailplanner. Using software or not is personal choice, but I would be extremely favourable to single races for non routers .The fact that some may cheat is rubbish . We are all sportmen and gentlemen ( gentle ladies as well ), and if there is one who is not would be immediatly visible by many means.
5) The shouting for anyone going astray or beaching is controversial . Honestly it is part of my sport experience and culture to beat my competition on the water , and not because their boat has wrecked on the rocks , but still understand those who feel robbed because someone had saved their direct competitor . Honestly I do not think that a personal behaviour of genlemanship with good and bad effects can be subject of any ruling.
6) Since many many moons now the correct rounding of marks has been enforced and the server DOES reject irregular roundings , so NO , you cannot have a team allowed to bypass that rule ...., BUT ...YES ..you can have on board people working for NOAA . In SOL there is no discriminatory rule in that respect . My advice though is that they would know about the weather exactly same time as you do through the gribs .
And finally ....Rod ...
SURSUM CORDA !!!!
(good courage and stay happy !! )
ciao all

Ciao Jeroen my friend ....
sorry ..I do not understand why you are referring to a breach of our self imposed rules . We have self imposed the rule that we would have not boatsitted Gilles other than occasionally in the RTW ( btw with the end of the series the issue does no longer exist , as Gilles will not be in the water again when ITA_2011 will be ) .
This story has been totally misunderstood, and if you look at the chat you will realise that : this morning ITA noticed that Exmero was going astray and shouted , as any other soler does , for anybody , when it happens . NZL Undercover , who has the pass for Exmero ( we dont ) interveened and put him back on track . Some solers saw this as ITA trying to take advantage of having exmero keeping position . This was totally untrue as the ranking numbers were completely set since long before then .
Antonio ( exmeromotu ) is one of the top gentlemen and sportsmen in SOL and I do not think anyone will ever self impose as a rule that of not shouting if seing him in trouble .....surely not ME
hope all clear now ....yes ?
now I can read your mind ...it is saying : " if it is so ...why did ITA apologise ?"
well....you cannot have all the answers from us ..LOL ..
ciao Jeroen
thanks for all the good work you do for SOL .

Ciao ALL
PARTLY as result of the NZL race having been launched with such short notice , I have dropped from long established SYC leadership to #33 ....YES ...no mistake ...spells correct ...THIRTYTHREE !!!!! ....
in spite of that I have voted for things to remain as they are , for three good reasons :
1) I care for the Community happiness and I want those who are to stay happy.
2) Chila deserves the satisfaction of being on top
3) It will be more fun for me to "come back" ...
see you all in the SOL waters ...
