so if we did a few races where the polar numbers were kept secret, would that mean that you wouldnt be able to use software for those races?

I dont usually get involved in the software debate. I think brain & co have done quite a good job of dveloping the skills and software and I'm usually happy to be within sight of them every now and then. Its just that I've been away from sol for a month or so and this debate is still going. I dont think that brain not sailing is a very good solution.

how about a compass with 15 degree points around the boat to make it easyier to set a course

How does it work? Am I right that all routing sorfware relies on the polars in XL that Brain so kindly shares with the rest of us?

How does brain get the polar numbers?

I dont want Brain to feel like he shouldnt make the most of his hard work and I dont think that software/non-software divisions can be policed. But I am too computerdumb to build my own software and too cheap to buy anyone elses.

If I am right that software needs the XL document, would having a few races in different boats where we get the polar picture on the steering tab but the XL data is unavailable solve the problem?

If I am wrong, please refer to the computerdumb statement above.

I completely agree with the focus on strategy. This is why I wouldnt want any of these races to count towards ranking, I wouldnt even record results beyond when the race is re-set.
However, there is not much strategy with the free sailing so a series of short races during this time wouldnt detract from the overall game but would provide an extra bit of fun while waiting for the next real race.
The advantages of these races would be that people would be able to challenge friends at a time convenient to them. Most people are unable to complete the long races all the time due to other commitments or real sailing and this way people would be given the chance to concentrate on an entire race.
Running timed races is one way of filling the time between races but I prefer fleet racing and would enjoy doing the odd short challenge.

I was wondering what anyone thought of some short races between or even alongside 'real' races.

I was thinking that a short 2 or 3 lap 2 hour windward/leeward race that re-set every 5 hours or so (so that all timezones are catered for) would be fun.

No points would be awarded for rankings and the boats could be changed every few days to keep it interesting.

It would be more fun than just sailing around between races and with races only lasting a couple of hours most people would be able to find the time to give it a go.

Is it something that could be done?

    Would anyone be interested?

Would it be possible for the weather times for each race to be confirmed on the registration page or on the race page or something?

CA 500 2024

In 2019, the organisers of the California Race Week introduced a new longer distance event for the world’s very largest maxi trimarans in town that year intent on setting new records for the TransPac Ocean Race on its 50th anniversary. This CA 500, 500nm from San Francisco to San Diego, was repeated in 2023, but this year it will be an online only event, as it is a lot more straightforward to get a fleet of Maxi trimarans out on the virtual water, than in real life.

Neumayer Station to Biscoe Wharf 2024

It’s Autumn now in Antarctica, the sun is permanently below the horizon, but during the day, from c 0900 to c 1700 local time, there is some twilight – nautical twilight, not to be confused with civil twilight which is brighter. The penguins are starting to huddle together to keep warm and the sea ice is growing. Time to get back to Biscoe Wharf then, before the water becomes impassible. Including a detour past Argentina’s main two Antarctic stations, it’s only 1900nm, so, although we’ll be in a hurry, we will take the bigger, better ice-classed Paratii 2 once more, just to be sure!

Melbourne to Osaka Prelude 2024

Welcome once again to what these days is Sailonline’s almost annual virtual Melbourne to Osaka Yacht Race. In real life, this double-handed 5500 nm race between these two sister cities, one deep in the southern hemisphere, the other high in the northern hemisphere, is run every four to five years, and is planned to be held again in 2025, so this race is a Prelude in partnership with the Melbourne Osaka Cup 2025 organising committee collaborating with the Ocean Racing Club of Victoria (ORCV), and the Sandringham (SYC) and Osaka Hokko (OHYC) yacht clubs. On this occasion, we’ll be racing the well-known First 40, a popular size of boat for a long-distance double-handed race. With the doldrums unavoidably lying across the track, you can expect to be at virtual sea for at least a month!
