Commentary
The A3 - Agage's Around Australia Series was first designed in 2012 following the sudden death of Aaron Gage and our departure from Adelaide back then was set against a background of great sadness. Eight years on and SOL’ers continue to remember Aaron, almost daily, and we continue our re-running of this epic series (this time with two discards!) sharing fond memories and smiling at what a contribution Aaron made. He would be stoked!

So, having started in Adelaide, then visited Melbourne and Hobart, the third leg of our 2020 commemorative nine-race series took us back to the mainland, to Sydney, that mecca of yachting and birthplace of the International 18ft skiff. With yachting, like much of the rest of life, closed down, it was an empty harbour – not a skiff to be seen to embarrass our rather more pedestrian First 47.7s – that welcomed our COVID-burgeoned fleet after 3 days of mostly hard slog into the wind, thankfully virtually.

As for the race itself, well, 39 was mostly the magic number, and the main challenge was how far west to tack to get further into the lift on said 39 and then tack back onto a northerly course to gradually ease sheets and finally gybe and hold offshore before hardening up onto a hot course for Sydney Heads in a finally dying breeze. Some didn't tack at all or only very little and some went way too far, but it was temporarily redundant restaurateur Ricotina who, it turned out in the end, got it just right. Superbly judged! And once we can all move about again, be sure to travel to Santa Stefano to celebrate and enjoy the fine food he serves up in his quayside Ristorante Il Moletto!!

The Vineyard Race 2026

For the 16th consecutive year, our SOLers are invited to tackle this iconic 250nm overnighter. The classic route charges out through the sound, leaves Buzzards Bay Light to starboard, rounds Block Island to starboard, and heads home.

This year's weapon of choice is the Beneteau First 47.7. A proven performer since its 2012 SOL debut, this Farr-designed cruiser/racer excels at leading real and virtual handicap fleets. Success will demand sharp tactical navigation, so watch the polars closely to conquer the sound's shifting winds!

New Ice Age 2026 - Scott Base to Neumayer Station

To complete our DN circumnavigation of Antarctica and our 4-race ice-boat marathon series, we continue clockwise, now departing from Scott Base back to Neumayer Station. It’s about 3500nm back as well, which, as said if there’s wind at all, should, well-wrapped in your DN-cockpits, not take you much more than five days. And remember: charts down here are unreliable – what is land and what is ice?!

Cross the Convergence 2026 - Tenerife to Fernando de Noronha

The sixth race of our series of ocean voyages across the World’s convergence zones takes us back up the Atlantic to Tenerife, from whence we will depart on a classic transatlantic passage to Brazil’s Fernando de Noronha. It’s 2150nm as the albatross flies, but you will undoubtedly have to take some and sometimes sudden detours to get your Volvo 70v4 through the doldrums stretching across your path from the Amazon to the Niger.
