Can you load these files?

0430 Wx file SWR

0430 Wx file Mistli's BBQ race

I don't know how long these links will be "live"...
I can open & view those files, & see the sequence of numbers .. Not sure what you mean by load.

Small example of what I see...
1.66 2.53 2.81 2.11 1.76 1 0.81 1.59 4.37 6.41 5.64 1.97 0.93 1.19 1.03 0.9 1.35 0.99 -0.47 -1.58 -0.52; 1.89 3.67 2.97 2.28 2.47 1.56 1.61 2.32 4.66 6.23 6.06 2.37 0.95 0.92 1.03 1.27 1.41 0.73 -0.8 -1.82 -0.55; 1.89 3.57 2.76 1.92
Interesting, those are the weather files the client is waiting for download. So you can access them but the client for some reason doesn't load them.
I have been having the same problem for a week or so but I think I may have just resolved it.

The standard client wasn't working for me so I tried the 'SOL Classic Client'. It worked but was pretty annoying because it's missing some valuable functionality.

So, why? Taking the link to the classic client (http://www.sailonline.org/windy/run/765/?version=classic) and dropping the "?version=classic" from the end worked a treat.

It turns out that the link to the classic client is formed a little differently from the ones being used on the 'Go To Race' buttons (http://144.76.111.8/windy/run/765/) which directly use the IP address of a server rather than its FQDN.
An update: There must have been a time - possibly a week or so ago - when the IP address (144.76.111.8) was directly coded somewhere on the web page, probably in one of the go-to-race buttons. Since then I have been using those IP-based URLs for the races.

I note that http://sailonline.org/whatever works ok; http://www.sailonline.org/whatever works ok; but http://144.76.111.8/whatever does not work for the current garphical client.

It would probably be better if the web server did not respond to IP-based requests. Or perhaps it should redirect to something based on a FQDN.
Thank you! That might very well be the problem. The "GO TO RACE" buttons are relative, they let you stay at the same domain (if it's an IP, it stays an IP). The links to classic should be relative too actually.

The problem ("client does not work when domain is IP" or "website is available with IP and does not redirect to domain") should be fixed at some point, but it can be avoided.

So, anyone with this problem, please make sure it says "sailonline.org" in the address bar when you load the client. If it does and you still have the problem, please report :)
Thanks for finding out the reason for this, it has now been fixed, i.e. file downloads from the server's ip address are now allowed.

I'm bit hesitant to forward the ip-accesses to sailonline.org as that way if people have dns problems they have no way to access the server at all. The game engine requires dns to work, but at least you could access the web, forums etc without.
Glad I was able to help.

hmm: I can see that downloads of Wx files from the server via IP works fine now but the client still hangs "waiting for Wx download" if I start it using an IP-based URL (eg. http://144.76.111.8/windy/run/765/).

A little packet-sniffing at the client end shows that the client is establishing TCP connections to the server on port 80 but not actually sending any request down the channel. The client then tears down the connection some 6 seconds later. Looks to me like there is also a probably buried somewhere in the client.

Hoping that helps.
Kroppy: FYI, GoToRace links (and a couple of others) in the 'archived races' section are also not relative URLs.
dtayls, can you try to clear the caches from your browser and try then again?

Technically, there is a file crossdomain.xml which the flash player loads to see which domains the flash app can legally load data from.

I have now added the server ip to this list and in my tests after clearing caches it started to work.

Transat à Deux 2025

Above you see a single-handed sailor semi-foiling his Beneteau Figaro III to the horizon. It is in fact Ireland’s Sailor of the Year and the overall winner of last year’s Solitaire du Figaro, Tom Dolan. Somehow, we got our hands on a polar for the Class, and rather than trying to surreptitiously track Tom and his mates in the 2025 edition of the Solitaire, sailing rather-short, single-handed legs across the Celtic Sea and Biscay, we thought we’d see how our virtual craft would fare on the Class’s double-handed 3900nm Trans-Atlantic, from somewhere in Brittanny to somewhere in the Caribbean via somewhere in the Canaries. Allez, mes braves!

Sinbad by Balloon 2025 - Toamasina to Baia de l'Oiseau

You may recall that when last we visited Madagascar in the company of Sinbad, the Sultan commanded our intrepid inspirator to seek out fabled islands where in Summer the sun barely set. We did and we returned but the Sultan wasn’t happy with Sinbad’s report, so here we go again, now by SOL Balloon instead of sailing vessel. Expect to be in the air for at least 2100nm and depending on how the wind brings us, anything between two weeks and two months before we shall descend at the Sultan’s given coordinates!
