Board » Technical Discussion » Trifecta Regatta Format

I am posting this topic here to determine if it is possible, within the SOL framework, to have a 3 leg race registration that offers 3 boats for the 1st leg & then only the 2 remaining boats for the 2nd leg & just a single boat choice for the final leg. I have fully developed proposal in mind but it hinges on this sine qua non concept. I am not looking for a discussion on the suitability of this approach at this time but just an assessment of its workability with a minimum of technical resources required to implement it.
None so blind
There is currently no way to present a different boat choice for different users (depending on their boat choices in previous races).

A proper implementation for this is not a simple thing.

But please, when you're ready, share the idea. I would love to see more races with a boat choice on sol, and a game mechanic like this would make it even more interesting.
The main idea is to have the full event based on total elapsed time but the choice & order of boats for each leg to be determined by the skippers. Every leg would, in all likelihood, have contingents of all 3 boats.

Sol has had a few occasions in the past where more than one boat type was employed & watching the arcs for each type at the start of these races always fascinated me. The eventual leader would not be an obvious forgone conclusion until all three legs were complete keeping interest high during each leg.

I also envision being able to give recognition, at least in the blog post that follows the conclusion of the full Regatta, mini podiums for the different boat types leg by leg.

I was hoping that like the timed race restart registration that a simple logic gate would gray out one of the radio buttons available based on the skipper's previous choices.

Just to be clear I am not suggesting running the same course 3 times but each leg to be a segment of an established course within the SOL inventory.

This is an interesting idea, unfortunately there is no way now to make the server limit the choices available as kroppyer said.

One option is to do this in voluntary basis and just disqualify boats that use the same boat twice. It would be bit more work for admins but still doable I guess..

New Ice Age 2026 - Scott Base to Neumayer Station

To complete our DN circumnavigation of Antarctica and our 4-race ice-boat marathon series, we continue clockwise, now departing from Scott Base back to Neumayer Station. It’s about 3500nm back as well, which, as said if there’s wind at all, should, well-wrapped in your DN-cockpits, not take you much more than five days. And remember: charts down here are unreliable – what is land and what is ice?!

Cross the Convergence 2026 - Tenerife to Fernando de Noronha

The sixth race of our series of ocean voyages across the World’s convergence zones takes us back up the Atlantic to Tenerife, from whence we will depart on a classic transatlantic passage to Brazil’s Fernando de Noronha. It’s 2150nm as the albatross flies, but you will undoubtedly have to take some and sometimes sudden detours to get your Volvo 70v4 through the doldrums stretching across your path from the Amazon to the Niger.
