Board » General Discussion » Polar for First 40.7

Our current polar doesn't really do this boat justice. I've attached an update based on Farr's own / IMS VPP.

Pretty similar from 0-20 kts. It's a tiny bit faster but the main difference is the addition of wind curves out to 30 kts TWS and better(?) data between 150 and 180 TWA.

Comments? Good/Bad idea?

I say aye!

Anything that makes this "simulation" more like IRL is good. Nice work 76T!

Hi Guys

The First 40.7 is now an old model.....
The new Farr boat is a First 40 so newer and faster. First 40.7 I think is a 2004ish design or earlier.

Cheers Undercover
Good point. I think one of the reasons that the First 40.7 is a popular boat for some of the local races is that lots of people have sailed on or against them? It's been requested for a couple of upcoming races.

Here's a polar for the new model if anyone wants to use it in their races:

Can I ask a general polar question? On SoL, we are looking at the True Wind angle on the polar diagrams. On the copy I have for one of the boats I sail on (Lindenberg 28), it refers to the apparent wind angle.

Whcih should I be taking more notice of?
SOL Polars are representative for the TWS given in the game. There is no need or distinction for Apparent Wind formulation. Another way to look at it is the compensation is built into the Polars as given.
None so blind
Right.

For real boats, use the TW polars for navigation and (optionally) the AW ones for picking tacking angles based on onboard instrumentation. (unless you have modern fancy integrated insruments)

Target speeds can often be a better/easier way to maximise performance:

OK, so which polar is used in SOL races?

The Vineyard Race 2025

For the first time since first hosting a virtual Vineyard in cooperation with Long Island's Stamford Yacht Club back in 2010, due to an operational calendaring error, Sailonline has missed the start of the real life race, the USA’s Labor Day weekend this year unusually falling across the turn of August. Silly SOL! So, a week late please join us anyway for a virtual rerun of Stamford’s iconic annual overnighter from their club line out the sound to Buzzard's Bay Light near Martha's Vineyard Island and back again, leaving Block Island to starboard. This year, Sailonline is making its magic MC 38 available to competitors, a race boat with a quirky polar that will require you to stay wide awake as you speed around the c 250 nm course, in rockstar style!

Africa by Sea 2025 - Maputo to Mogadishu

The fifth leg of our exploration of Africa By Sea takes us north along the length of the Continent’s succulent sub-tropical and tropical Indian Ocean coast. Much fought over by traders and colonists both well-before and after a Portuguese expedition under the command of Vasco da Gama first sailed there from Europe back in the 16th century, it is yet to be properly explored as a yachting destination. With plenty of islands off- and inshore, small and very large, there is much to interrupt your 1900nm voyage and visit in your Swan 65, from Maputo to Mogadishu! Race #1858
