Cheers Guys,

Polar Hop is now understood. I thought it may be some bug in the software........:)

Trying to get it set up how I would like to use it IRL and then figure out how and why it gives certain numbers and learn about the programme.

Cheers Undercover
Exmer,

zulu time was already selected...

But as you can see in the attached file, I have never had any wind data in the little box down right, instead I have "calm"

Maybe is it not only a question of time...

I don't want to bother you with my problems, but usually I'm available between 1 and 6 p.m. utc and after 8 p.m

Regards

Joshua, are you by any change running Windows Vista or 7? I've been trying the software myself today and on my Win7 machine I am getting similar results as you. A first glance on my WinXP laptop shows much more promise. At least there the proper wind strength and direction are shown in the lower right corner of the statusbar.

Cheers,
Philip

Back for more testing tomorrow or Friday.

Schakel & Joshua

Just so you guys know, I'm running BW on a Toshiba laptop with Vista at work, and at home I'm running it on a MacBook Pro via WINE (WINdows Emulator). I've got WINE setup to emulate Windows XP.

Cheers.
Thank you Schakel and Exmer :)

I have vista on my pc, yesterday I asked my friend Do Ping to do exactly the same I'm doing and he got the wind correct... but his pc is running with xp !

Thank you all for your help but I think I will give up as I have no idea what is going wrong...

Cheers
Joshua

I'm at work right now, this machine is running Vista Home Premium with Service Pack 2. Vista has a compatibility feature that you can maybe try to get BW going.

Cheers
I've just about tried every compatibility mode for Win7 and nothing doing. This screenshot was with compatibility for Vista SP2 with admin rights. Still no go.

On XP things are looking a little better with the wind speed off by about .3 ~ .5, but wind direction is off by 20° or more (looking at specific points with bwr Grid Periods set to 15:00 Z and sol client weather slider set at 15:00 Z).

Another clue, this from the BW download page

"32-bit executables. (They will run under 64 bit Vista and Windows 7 in compatibility mode, and be located under the Program Files (x86) directory subtree.)"

So make sure that all files are under the Program Files (x86) directory subtree.

I will try it on a Windows 7 machine to see if I can get it going...

Will post results here.

Cheers
It runs perfectly for me with a one-click install on my Windows 7 64bit machine. No compatibility settings forced, default directories etc...

I know this doesn't help anyone, but maybe we can narrow down what we're looking for.
Just installed it into a Windows 7 64 bit machine without any problems either. Installation automatically defaulted to the Program Files (x86)directory subtree. Wind readings were right on the money for the Chi-Mac 7/22 18UTC and 21UTC.

From Joshua's previous pics I know his executables ARE NOT on the "Program Files (x86)" directory subtree so if he's got a 64 bit machine that could be the problem... If he's got a 32bit machine then I haven't got the foggiest idea what could be wrong!

Cheers

Red Eye - Myth of Malham 2025

In 1947, Hugh McLean & Sons of Gourock, Scotland built a radical racing yacht for John Illingworth, soon-to-be Commodore of the RORC, to a design by Laurent Giles. With a masthead rig, giving her ‘free’ sail area per the rules of the time, and short overhangs reducing pitching, Myth of Malham went on to win The Fastnet that year and again in 1949, and to compete in numerous Admiral's Cups. In 1958, in honour of the yacht, the Myth of Malham race was conceived - a mini-Fastnet to the first lighthouse on a rock west of Cowes, Eddystone, rather than the second, to be held in non-Fastnet years. IRL this year it has been raced already, but this stops us not from “Red Eye” racing its online 230nm in Fareast 31Rs, leaving how to deal with the Isle of Wight open to your own discretion.

Africa by Sea 2025 - Maputo to Mogadishu

The fifth leg of our exploration of Africa By Sea takes us north along the length of the Continent’s succulent sub-tropical and tropical Indian Ocean coast. Much fought over by traders and colonists both well-before and after a Portuguese expedition under the command of Vasco da Gama first sailed there from Europe back in the 16th century, it is yet to be properly explored as a yachting destination. With plenty of islands off- and inshore, small and very large, there is much to interrupt your 1900nm voyage and visit in your Swan 65, from Maputo to Mogadishu! Race #1858
