I'm sorry if I seem to be misunderstanding things, but why does it appear that all of the races have to be based on real-life races?
This being a virtual environment seems open to whatever type of race we could imagine!
Is there some technical reason as to why we could not hold races in places where it would be impossible to hold a real race?
Ideas might include such things as -
sailing in conditions which would not allow real sailing (frozen seas, notoriously high winds)
or sailing where it is not normally feasible (eg. Rialto Bridge, Venice, round Murano Island and back).
I know it doesn't really matter where we sail, but it does add a bit of novelty.
I did like the race to Fowey, even though we all got comprehensively thrashed!!
Please don't take this as crisism, I appreciate the time and effort that goes into organising things like this, so this is merely a discussion subject :-)

Danny
Hi Danny - you raise a very good point and it hadn't occurred to me that we are in a phase of based-on-reality races..although, to be fair, charging round the Falkland Islands in an Orange Cat was dreamed up by victory!

If you look ahead into the calendar for August and on into September you will find that many races are pure invention(e.g. Atlant'Iles, Mistli's BBQ Race etc) some (like the Suursaari) are based on a real race but not being run at the same time, and others, like the Auckland Regional races are being run around the same time as an IRL race because there are SOLers racing in the real races and its fun to compare performances.

Feel free to look at the guide to proposing races and design your own course - remembering to suggest a boat type (the list of current boats available in SOL is a sticky at the top of this thread) and it can become a SOL reality :-D

I am still quite new to organising races/calendar etc so all comments, providing they are constructive are very welcome!!

Thanks for taking the time to contribute :-)

Hi Jawz - I have just had a look at the Hawaiian kmz and there is nothing stored in it? Just the name - no waypoints at all!! Please would you check you sent me the right file?

The kmz for the CapeTown-Rio looks fine :-) - thank you for making it so promptly!
What boat would you like to use for this one?
:-)

Hi Rainbow,

Ill work on the Hawaii race this weekend, a full race proposal. Standby.

Regarding the Cape to Rio race I think the better sailors amongst us might be able to tell me which one to use. I thought a Maxi100. But really a good boat that beats well upwind is what we need.
Hawaiin Slalom

I know, I know. I'm a sadist

But you will enjoy the thrill of finishing this one!

Here it is! The longest and most painful memory that we in Africa must deal with. Sorry folks if it appears politically incorrect.

Hiya Jawz - two super races!! Thank you.

I have got both in GE and at first sight we may need to add a waypoint to the Slavers to stop the rhumbline cutting across too much land.

Did slavers stop off anywhere for water? Or did they make the journey non-stop do you know?

The Hawaiian zigzag looks great fun!

I will ask 76T to recommend a polar for the Slaver Schooner :-)

Newport Bermuda Race 2026

The 636-mile Newport Bermuda Race is one of the oldest regularly scheduled ocean races, and with the Fastnet and the Sydney Hobart Race, it is one of the three great classic races of the yachting world. First raced in 1906, now in its 54th biennial, the Race can again also be participated in online. In real life, the race is open to entry in four different division – Double-Handed, St. David's Lighthouse, Gibbs Hill Lighthouse, and Finisterre Division – which in the past we have also offered online. This year, however, our online race will be all-in one-design in silky swift Club Swan 50 yachts, so that your results can count towards SOL’s SUPerBUDdy title, whilst hopefully still giving you a chance of overall line honours against the fastest yachts of the real-life Gibbs Hill Division, especially if you can find some forecast winds that don’t quite work out that way on the real water!

Thessaloniki to Port Said 2026

Welcome back to the Eastern Mediterranean for the fifth race of our Magical Mediterranean Series. Only marginally less unlikely to be ever raced in real life during SOL’s lifetime than our previous race from Tobruk to Iskenderun, this 710nm race takes us from Greece’s ancient northern port of Thessaloniki through the Aegean island maze, south east into the Levantine Sea to a finish in modern Port Said, in splendid Swan 65s!

TuziTekwini TIMED Race 2026

Sailonline is delighted to have been invited again to partner with the King Shaka Yacht Club (KSYC) of South Africa to bring a virtual version of the Tuzi Tekwini Ocean Raceto our online community.

Achievable in a single day and seen by some as an easy mile-builder, the course is more tactical than some think and should not be underestimated. This iconic race promises to be an unforgettable experience for yachting enthusiasts.
Our online version of the race will be a TIMEDrace so you may RE-REGISTER HEREto try again after finishing a run. You will have two weeks to test your skill and decision making after the race opens.
