AHOY all SOLers esp. those in NZ!!

SOL will be running its own version of this race but at present it has been set up in SOL as a non-stop race, with the IRL official stopping off points as in-shore marks that need to be rounded.

This seemed to be the best way to manage the parameters of the race - see the NoR Section 5 for how the IRL race will handle the stop-overs/mass restarts.

Please will you give your opinion on the current SOL proposal of a non-stop race with semi-tricky inshore waypoints?

If you think this won't work, please suggest a way for SOL to accommodate the formulaic stopover percentage prior to mass-starts contemplated by the NoR

here

Thanks!!

howabout very tricky waypoints?
Forget the tricky way points and just do a race around the North Island non stop.
I'd prefer just going around island rather than dealing with the harbours. Assuming that I'm not doing the race of course.
Anyone else?

If you want to see how it looks in SOL you must log in as the sol boat:

Username: sol

Password: sol

and then click here here :

The race will be open for viewing/comment for a few days before being archived again prior to being run.

Please note that the tricky waypoints are included to accommodate the IRL stops AND to prevent folks just zooming right out to sea!

We will soon be in February so any/all comments will be very welcome!

The way the NOR is worded (and how it has been executed in the past) gives a bit of wiggle room.

I think there are three choices:

* Leave it as it stands now. It looks great, and will be pretty demanding.

* Follow the intent of the rules. Because the restarts are "at a convenient time", we don't need to wait for the 60% boat. Make an estimate and announce the next start. The 60% is designed to handle the handicap spread - sailing one-design our finishes will be much tighter.

* Try to follow the IRL fleet. They don't decide the start at the last minute, as there is the mandatory stop in between. This will be a bit confusing.

Sailing the 88 we'll be slow vs the (mostly bigger) IRL fleet. If we like the stopover format, there's no reason not to set the starts with plenty of notice. I'll be happy to pitch in with estimates.

For reference, the intervals from the last running were:

1000 start, ~1.25 days
24h stop
1700 start, ~4 days
48h stop
1700 start, ~1.7 days
48h stop
0900 start, 3.5 days

The stops are long relative to the finishing times. We wouldn't have trouble with overlapping legs.

I have no Idea how the real Times of restarts are set, but one normaly can estimate the arrival quite well within the last 6 hours. So i would suggest the leading pack to announce their finish a few hours ahead and set a Start time some 24 hours after that.
It would leave everyone enough time to finish, register and set DC's for the next Start.

BTW: Is the Napier Mark set correct to pass east? It looks a bit as its intetion was to force one into Napier Bay, not just as a reminder of its presence.
Thanks for input thus far!

Another q - the Young 88 is a v popular NZ boat but is there another we could use that might be a little speedier?

Excellent catch Taz! Question should be referred to the designers, but IRL there is a stop at Napier, so I assume that the intention was to pass it to Stb.

Yes there are a bunch of representative boat we could use. The 88 is a popular class, and we have a great polar, but it's a bit small for this type of race. There are a couple of Young 11s in the entry list that I have polars for.

I'm happy with the boat as-is. I'll post the polars for a couple of alternates anyways. Doesn't hurt.
Folks - please note that you will now need to log in as the sol boat before viewing this race!!

Thanks for comments thus far... the race will stay available/open for comment until the weekend.

Red Eye - Myth of Malham 2025

In 1947, Hugh McLean & Sons of Gourock, Scotland built a radical racing yacht for John Illingworth, soon-to-be Commodore of the RORC, to a design by Laurent Giles. With a masthead rig, giving her ‘free’ sail area per the rules of the time, and short overhangs reducing pitching, Myth of Malham went on to win The Fastnet that year and again in 1949, and to compete in numerous Admiral's Cups. In 1958, in honour of the yacht, the Myth of Malham race was conceived - a mini-Fastnet to the first lighthouse on a rock west of Cowes, Eddystone, rather than the second, to be held in non-Fastnet years. IRL this year it has been raced already, but this stops us not from “Red Eye” racing its online 230nm in Fareast 31Rs, leaving how to deal with the Isle of Wight open to your own discretion.

Africa by Sea 2025 - Maputo to Mogadishu

The fifth leg of our exploration of Africa By Sea takes us north along the length of the Continent’s succulent sub-tropical and tropical Indian Ocean coast. Much fought over by traders and colonists both well-before and after a Portuguese expedition under the command of Vasco da Gama first sailed there from Europe back in the 16th century, it is yet to be properly explored as a yachting destination. With plenty of islands off- and inshore, small and very large, there is much to interrupt your 1900nm voyage and visit in your Swan 65, from Maputo to Mogadishu! Race #1858
