Hi SOLings,
why have we hidden islands now? In the past you were able to see every SLI in every zoomlevel. Now they pop up suddenly when you zoom in. See attached examples…

We have a new chart system that allows easier race setup and also higher resolution maps without bandwidth/performance penalty. The drawback is that the client need to switch to lower resolution charts when zoomed out.

This system has been in place alongside the "old style" charts since middle of December IIRC.

Makes me wonder: If zoomed out and no islands in my way on my screen, are we able to jump that SLI?

Guess not, but must give a weird instrument panel: Suddenly BS=0, TWA=0.

No, if zoomed out there might be unseen islands. In most cases this is not a problem because most islands are where you naturally want to be zoomed in.

Is it possible to have a download of the map for a given race occurring ONCE ONLY at time of registering for a race? Then only the boat positions and tracks, and weather, would need to be downloaded at each 1 min or 1/4 min update? This should reduce server load and allow for more frequent updates? This is a real "bugbear" for those of us 'Practice racing'
If it breaks, it's not strong enough--if it doesn't, it's too heavy.

No it would not be that easy actually, however most browsers will cache the tiles locally after the initial download.

Regata dell’Accademia Navale 2026

Welcome to Sailonline’s partnership with the City of Livorno (Leghorn say the English) in cooperation with the local yacht clubs and the Italian Navy, offering all the online opportunity to race the famous Regata dell’Accademia Navale - 630nm in length. Starting and finishing in Livorno, this year the race takes you the length and breadth of the Tyrrhenian Sea via little Mortorio (Mortoriotto) off Sardinia to Capri and home again to Livorno. This race also counts towards Sailonline’s Magical Mediterranean Series and the SuperBuddy title. Online, you will be sailing a Mini 6.50, to give you a match against several of the real-life entrants, which you will be able to track on-screen!

Rommel by Balloon 2026 - Through the Sahara


Generalfeldmarschall Johannes Erwin Eugen Rommel may have been that chivalrous, gallant tank commander of legend, led astray by the Prussian military traditions of loyalty and chain of command, but one thing he wasn’t, was mad. So, let’s do it anyway – not stick to the coast and the battle for logistical superiority – but depart the oases of Siwa south west into the desert for Agadez and its uranium. And let’s go by balloon, it’s only 2500km (1250nm)!

Falklands to Tasmania 2026

Welcome to yet another all-new route. This next race is part of our Ocean Championship as well as the ROW series. Falklands to Tasmania, is like last year's island to island.
