Board » General Discussion » Real Life Honesty Race question

Page: 1 2 3 4 Next

Hi all. We have a RL honesty race on the go here. I'd love to know if anyone has a spreadsheet created for such a race which would ndicate the best conditions in which to start. Obviously, I have the course, and the distances/bearings between each mark, and I have the boat polars.

To save me starting from scratch, I thought it would be worthwhile asking on here first....
Baggus.... I freely admit ignorance. What is an RL Honesty Race?
It's a set course. Any boat can sail it at any time of day or night, however many times they want. At the end of the season, the best corrected time wins. The honesty bit is because you have to be honest about your time as chances are no-one else will be there to see you make that perfect 3am run......

The tricky bit is working out when the best conditions are to start, hence my question.

(The RL bit = Real Life)

Got it! Thanks.
Sounds like fun (what SOL race isn't???). Just to clarify... can you pick any polar you want and, if so, are winners based with boat classes?
No matter how it works, I'M IN!

SP
The race I'm talking about is literally real life. A set course here in Bermuda in different classes of boats on corrected times. You are mord than welcome to join us, but you must be able to handle rum & champagne!

SoL does online races occasionally - time we had another one!

Edited to add - there's one starting in 1d 8hrs.... :-)

Baggus... having done a few Bermuda races, I'm as "Dark & Stormy" as they come. If I could get there, I would join you. Have a great series!

SP
Baggus, why dont you use a router?
It would require a rather sophisticated spreadsheet indeed to do what you want, and would only be emulating a router anyway.

You can start by eyeballing a reasonable time in a grib viewer - then plug that time into the router, and trial each hour a few hours each side. When you find the 2 smallest ETEs then split between them and try a H.30 start time. You wont really get much more accurate than down to 15 minutes, and (esp IRL) other factors might override this anyway.... Bluewater is free...

This is just what router users would do in a SOL timed race anyway...

Edit: i reread u didnt say you had gribs, so use uGrib or Expedition LT - both free and capable to download the wx for a specified area... I would recommend Expedition LT as it has more choice of weather models, and its own propreitary system for 'remodelling' the GFS and CMC into smaller grid sizes. Actually if you sail alot IRL then their subscriptions arent too badly priced either - check out predictwind.com - actually come to think of it they have a free online router you can use, and input your own polar data into and a course... wont be as accurate as BWR or Expedition but it will def allow you to narrow in on a good time.

Sry that was me forgot to logout from sol account after checking the SJORA race ;-)
I help develop the client interface for the best online ocean racing sim there is... __/)/)_/)__
Cheers for that Aaron - will give it a go! btw - what's the dinghy in your photo? Looks like a Hornet.
Its called an Australian Sharpie, & evolved from the 12 sq m Heavyweight Sharpies sailed at the 1956 Melbourne Olympics:

Race to Up Helly Aa 2026

A-OI!!! The fiery spirit of Shetland’s legendary Up Helly Aa returns, and Sailonline’s annual race to Lerwick is once again upon us. Covering 383 nautical miles from Aberdeen, SOLers will tackle winter waters steeped in Viking tradition. This year, we race the classic Frers 33, a proven cruiser-racer born from the golden era of offshore racing and still a sturdy performer both on the virtual and real water. Can you master the course and reach Lerwick in time for the flames?

SAILING NOTE: Gruney may be approached from any direction but must be passed for rounding purposes as indicated on the chart.

Red Eye - Hobart Convict Run 2026

Back in 2010, one of our SOLers of the first hour, AUS_Scott76, came up with this ‘Convict Run’ out from Hobart, past Cape Raoul and the penal colony of Port Arthur, round Tasman Island, up and back down the east coast of Tasmania, to finish with a tight technical run – so Scott called it – up the picturesque D'entrecasteaux Channel, home to Hobart once again. It’s 250nm, ideal for a bit of ‘Red Eye’ in comfortable Finngulf 43’s, and if the original idea was to pick up some convicts on the way for a bit of R&R and sea air, you may always drop’m back before returning to Hobart!

New Ice Age 2026 - Longyearbyen to Browerville

Although we have by no means exhausted the possibilities of ice boating on lakes at high latitudes or high altitudes, it was noticeable that as our 2025 Series progressed, there were calls from time to time for longer-distance challenges, and so in response to these calls we will pretend that global warming has reversed and as a result the coastal waters of Antarctica and Russia and Canada have fully (and smoothly!) frozen over offering us the possibility of a 4-race New Ice Age series in our trusted no-PL DN machines. Our first leg takes us 2600nm from Svalbard’s Longyearbyen east to North Alaska’s Browerville. You’ll be a few days on the ice, so dress warmly and take some provisions; go!

Cross the Convergence 2026 - Robinson Crusoe to Galapagos

Welcome to our first race of a new series of ocean voyages across the World’s convergence zones, this first race taking you north from south of the Tropic of Capricorn to the Equator-straddling Galapagos, home of magical iguanas and other exotic fauna (but no mythical kings, Dory) Departing from the island where in 1704 adventurer Alexander Selkirk inspired Daniel Defoe to write the best-seller "The Life and Adventures of Robinson Crusoe", by debarking off the unsound "HMS Cinque Ports", four months before she foundered off the coast of present-day Colombia, we will sail the 2200nm in our decidedly sounder and faster than the " Cinque Ports",
