Thanks for the ideas guys, as you might have seen we are running the Volvo Ocean Race.
I am a ex-admin of SOL who joins in from time to time.
Is it possible to get polars from all the VO70s. If that is possible then all can chose which VO70 they believe in and race that one. WE raced different KTH boats once

Good suggestion, but the polar info is top secret info.
It is not that we can call the current teams and ask for their polar files.

We wil do a boat selection some time again, but not in combination with the VOR.

Back to the scoring...

My suggestion is also to keep it simple but create a mechanism so that there's some incentive for all boats. Based on experience we can predict that our top SYC members will generally be taking most of the points for the first boats across the line. Setting SOL gates is problematic since it would create an difference with VOR boat and restrict strategic freedom to find optimum weather routing. It would be good to create more interest / competition down the field. So my proposal would be to extend points awarded to say first 20 boats across the finish line (30;25;20;18;16;15,14,13 etc). Award points for top 5 boats achieving most miles sailed in 24 hours on each leg. Award points for top 5 boats based on most places gained in one or more 24 or 48 hour SOLPowerPlay periods notified by SOL race control through email to entrants during race (helps maintain website hits for advertisers during long races!)

Just a few ideas to stimulate discussion

Nick,

I'm intrigued by your interesting suggestions, thank you so much! I have never thought of SOLPowerPlay before, and I'd like to test it in some way or form (and not only because of the extra hits, since we doesn't have any banners ;) )!
Hey guys... I thought you were running the volvo game????
If you mean the official game, no that hasn't worked.
But its a motivation to keep imprroving till they will :-)

We had meetings to get them interested but they weren't impressed enough I guess. We will try to make the flash client more appealing at the first view and see what it will lead too.

I think the official game will benefit SOL.
The official game locks very complex at a first glans and you have to pay if you want to have some features. No mobile client.

I say stick to the simple and easy way. : )

Yes, the official game will expand the market which is good for everyone. "A rising tide lifts all the boats" :)

Red Eye - Myth of Malham 2025

In 1947, Hugh McLean & Sons of Gourock, Scotland built a radical racing yacht for John Illingworth, soon-to-be Commodore of the RORC, to a design by Laurent Giles. With a masthead rig, giving her ‘free’ sail area per the rules of the time, and short overhangs reducing pitching, Myth of Malham went on to win The Fastnet that year and again in 1949, and to compete in numerous Admiral's Cups. In 1958, in honour of the yacht, the Myth of Malham race was conceived - a mini-Fastnet to the first lighthouse on a rock west of Cowes, Eddystone, rather than the second, to be held in non-Fastnet years. IRL this year it has been raced already, but this stops us not from “Red Eye” racing its online 230nm in Fareast 31Rs, leaving how to deal with the Isle of Wight open to your own discretion.

Africa by Sea 2025 - Maputo to Mogadishu

The fifth leg of our exploration of Africa By Sea takes us north along the length of the Continent’s succulent sub-tropical and tropical Indian Ocean coast. Much fought over by traders and colonists both well-before and after a Portuguese expedition under the command of Vasco da Gama first sailed there from Europe back in the 16th century, it is yet to be properly explored as a yachting destination. With plenty of islands off- and inshore, small and very large, there is much to interrupt your 1900nm voyage and visit in your Swan 65, from Maputo to Mogadishu! Race #1858
