Page: 1 2 3 4 5 6 Next

This year will be the first time that SOL buddies up with The Tall Ships Races and to allow SOLers to have the fun of choosing to race a different boat in each event, the events will be run independently, i.e., not as a series.

The first race starts at the beginning of July, so it is not long to decide which boat appeals.

Here are polar graphics for each boat available, showing VMG (thanks AGage):

Class A Large
Class A Small
Class B
Class C
Class D

This is going to be fun!!

The SOL Engine Room is liaising with Yellowbrick Tracking who are the tracker providers for the Tall Ships Races 2011 to get one boat in each category onto the SOL screen.

The IRL Race Director has chosen the following boats for SOL to track as he considers them to be eminently representative of their category:

Class A (L) -- Mir
Class A (S) -- Pogoria
Class B -- Rupel
Class C -- Dar Szczecina
Class D -- Rona II

Although the weather looks unfavorable for it I'll go with Class A as the full riggers are awesome.

Will the performance calculation be different for each class also? The small ones would pick up speed quicker than the big, heavy ships.

(chksix)
Pierre, performance % is computed the same for all boats, as it is in other multi-class races - class isn't part of the equation (literally ;-) ).

I think one of the Class A Large would IRL take a LOOOONG time to tack - actually I wonder if it is even possible for them to pass head to wind ??

I help develop the client interface for the best online ocean racing sim there is... __/)/)_/)__
A well-sailed square rigger can be more manoeuverable than a fore-aft rigged vessel. The sails on the different masts can be braced around independently, so you
have side-to-side thrust available even with no steerage way. Fore pushing bow to port, mizzen pushing stern to stb, rudder ready to back stern to stb etc... The closest a modern rig can get is backing the jib, but in most boats it's pretty much a momentum affair.

Not super snappy though! Sails could be hauled up, or struck and reset, rigging re-led...

Some excellent reading for between tacks:

"Seamanship in the Age of Sail"

There a very generous preview on Google books!

Also maybe "Eagle Seamanship" and "A Young Sea Officer's Sheet Anchor". Not so wonderfully illustrated, but fun all the same.

Iceland to the Falklands 2026

Welcome to an all-new route, the first of three Round the 'Old World' of Europe, Africa, Australia and Asia. To give each leg of the ROW a bit of length we'll try to hug the coasts as little as possible, so starting in Iceland our first leg of the series, which will also be the final leg of our Quarter 1 Ocean Championships takes us 7200nm to the Falklands, the full length of the Atlantic end to end. To make sure we'll get it done within the month we'll be sailing our Maxi Trimaran.

New Ice Age 2026 - Browerville to Longyearbyen

Our 2026 long-distance ice-boating challenge continues with a second race in Arctic waters, now from Browerville, where we arrived less than a month ago, continuing east, back to Svalbard’s Longyearbyen, leaving Canada’s Ellesmere Island to port and Denmark’s Greenland to starboard. It’s about 2500nm, which, if there’s wind at all, should, well-wrapped in your DN-cockpits, not take you more than a day or three, thus to complete your first (of several) online circumnavigation of the planet of 2026!

Beketov by Balloon 2026 - In Siberia

Way-back-when France and England, and Spain as well, were squabbling about who should control what of North America, only to lose the most of it to their own insurging colonists, their eastern European neighbour empire, Russia, was quietly assimilating vast, thinly nomadically populated territory of its own – Siberia! Amongst the many explorers and adventurers that served Russia so well in these conquests was the Cossack hetman Pyotr Beketov. Let’s pretend we’re he and eschewing horseback, let’s travel by balloon from Yekaterinberg to Krasnoyarsk – just a short 2000km (1100nm) section of the Trans-Siberian Express’ 9289km!
