Board » Flag Officers » Races » SOL World Race leg 3 course

May I respectfully submit a request that the course for Leg 3 have the stipulation that boats pass to the SOUTH of Dondra Head (lat:5*55'09.35 N ; Long:80*35'14.49 E ) on Sri Lanka.
The Palk Strait is limited to depths of 1 metre at the shoals of Adam's Bridge, so it's pretty obvious that VO70 yachts could not be navigated through this area.
I recall in the last SOL World race this was allowed and boats gained an advantage. In the interest of realism perhaps this could be accomadated?
Carry on Regardless
As Jeroen is 'in charge' of this series I will see your request is forwarded to him.

Hi Seafly,

Thanks for your request.
I already had a look into that and will likely add the extra mark at Dondra.
Its already set up but not included atm.
Thanks for the reminder and a excellent point.

Jeroen
WHAT?????

No chance to sail into a bridge and be dismasted??

How else is 50% of the fleet IRL going to be eliminated, as per Leg 1 results!! LOL!!
If it breaks, it's not strong enough!
LOL - seems Jeroen sometimes makes the same mistake as me when checking races prior to reg opening - and making forum posts...

I'm not getting it to load up the map. Gets stuck in the blue loading screen.
pierre,
Some reasons for race not loading:
*Not being properly logged in.
*Very slow internet connection.
*Old version of Flash Player.

I have also noticed some chat about client problems after a recent Mozilla FF update. Maybe try a different browser...chrome, IE9, Opera... I have no problems with chrome even on a 3G mobile connection.

Interesting!!!

I was having problems the past month so loaded Firefox as an alternative browser and my loading issues disappeared!

George
Cheers, I'll try FF if it doesn't load up tonight. Flash is up to date but my inet connection is abysmal.
You thought we have it tough navigating the Strait... IRL boats have two exclusion zones to deal with, and some pretty narrow gaps to hit (not to mention ship traffic).

They have to activate their AIS between longitudes of Pulau We and Horsburgh Lighthouse, so we should be able to watch them dodge tankers pretty much realtime :)

Red Eye - Myth of Malham 2025

In 1947, Hugh McLean & Sons of Gourock, Scotland built a radical racing yacht for John Illingworth, soon-to-be Commodore of the RORC, to a design by Laurent Giles. With a masthead rig, giving her ‘free’ sail area per the rules of the time, and short overhangs reducing pitching, Myth of Malham went on to win The Fastnet that year and again in 1949, and to compete in numerous Admiral's Cups. In 1958, in honour of the yacht, the Myth of Malham race was conceived - a mini-Fastnet to the first lighthouse on a rock west of Cowes, Eddystone, rather than the second, to be held in non-Fastnet years. IRL this year it has been raced already, but this stops us not from “Red Eye” racing its online 230nm in Fareast 31Rs, leaving how to deal with the Isle of Wight open to your own discretion.

Africa by Sea 2025 - Maputo to Mogadishu

The fifth leg of our exploration of Africa By Sea takes us north along the length of the Continent’s succulent sub-tropical and tropical Indian Ocean coast. Much fought over by traders and colonists both well-before and after a Portuguese expedition under the command of Vasco da Gama first sailed there from Europe back in the 16th century, it is yet to be properly explored as a yachting destination. With plenty of islands off- and inshore, small and very large, there is much to interrupt your 1900nm voyage and visit in your Swan 65, from Maputo to Mogadishu! Race #1858
