Board » Technical Support » Coordinate discrepancies

Hello,

When moving my mouse over the starting line of leg 3 ( I am assuming it will be the same as the finish line of leg 2) I see that the coordinates are 24N47 - 54E28. However, according to the official leg 3 notice of race, the start will be at 24N28.1220 054E16.9440. These official coordinates, according to my mouse position, are on the mainland approximately 13.34 nm @ 210.74 from the starting line.

When checking my cursor position in Sailplanner,it shows the race start position accurately

When using the Sailplanner near the end of leg 2, I noticed this discrepancy and stopped using it thinking that it had a bug.

I have now deduced that my mouse location in SOL is inaccurate. How do I fix that? I am using Firefox latest version on Windows vista. I have tried deleting my browser cache.

Thank you

Raymond on tequilla2
Hi tequilla2 - this is a common mismatch when comparing between different maps. The SOL client uses decimal degrees (24.469N) while brainaid's NOR is using degree-minutes (24N28.122). The giveaway is the position of the "N" as well as any spaces, and sometimes ' and " ...

60 minutes per degree, so 24N 28.122' translates as 24N + 28.122/60=.469

Confusing yes, and probably responsible for several hundred annual IRL runnings-aground, but there you go... SOL is very realistic! :)

I think 76T has UNDERSTATED the number of groundings by a factor > 100!! LOL!!
If it breaks, it's not strong enough!
I'm not quite sure how differences in coordinate systems can be responsible for running aground, especially as SOL does not use coordinates for any inputs, but you may be interested to know that in an upcoming client release there will be the option to display coordinates as either decimal degrees or degrees decimal minutes. The DDM format will also include direction, so instead of -1.50 it will display '1°30.0S' (or W if a longitude)
I help develop the client interface for the best online ocean racing sim there is... __/)/)_/)__

Red Eye - Myth of Malham 2025

In 1947, Hugh McLean & Sons of Gourock, Scotland built a radical racing yacht for John Illingworth, soon-to-be Commodore of the RORC, to a design by Laurent Giles. With a masthead rig, giving her ‘free’ sail area per the rules of the time, and short overhangs reducing pitching, Myth of Malham went on to win The Fastnet that year and again in 1949, and to compete in numerous Admiral's Cups. In 1958, in honour of the yacht, the Myth of Malham race was conceived - a mini-Fastnet to the first lighthouse on a rock west of Cowes, Eddystone, rather than the second, to be held in non-Fastnet years. IRL this year it has been raced already, but this stops us not from “Red Eye” racing its online 230nm in Fareast 31Rs, leaving how to deal with the Isle of Wight open to your own discretion.

Africa by Sea 2025 - Maputo to Mogadishu

The fifth leg of our exploration of Africa By Sea takes us north along the length of the Continent’s succulent sub-tropical and tropical Indian Ocean coast. Much fought over by traders and colonists both well-before and after a Portuguese expedition under the command of Vasco da Gama first sailed there from Europe back in the 16th century, it is yet to be properly explored as a yachting destination. With plenty of islands off- and inshore, small and very large, there is much to interrupt your 1900nm voyage and visit in your Swan 65, from Maputo to Mogadishu! Race #1858
