Just some pictures taken in my various years working around the shetlands offshore. There no "sailing" pictures but an impression of the area.

NOTICE 28 January: Please follow the racing line from Moray Firth to Gruney.

I had really hoped that the era of folks trying to sail other than intended was long over but it appears not.

It is however possible to approach Gruney from the SE - this is not what was intended.

There is ample time prior to a race start for people to spot and highlight potential wrinkles in the sailing line.

Sadly the possibility of approaching Gruney from the SE was not noted so all we can do is ask that the racing line is to be followed here.

Hi RC,

I don't understand this. As long as the WP is rounded properly, there can't be a dsq.

ciao
Bernd
K3 - you are absolutely right and I have now amended my post.

Thank you.
Sometimes it's not so easy to understand how the race is intended.

I'm so glad, that I messed it up already last night so I can sleep inside the Shetlands when all the other SOLings are awake.

ciao
Bernd
Rc i am sorry but i have to disagree on this
,
Gruney can be approached from al sides as long as waypoint is rounded correctly .

Gruney is free to pass from all sides , that was and is the basic idea . If i didn't want that possibility i would have added an extra waypoint at papa Stour in the same way as with Hascosay.
Tempest - OK!!

In that case:

CORRECTION: Gruney may be approached from any direction but must be passed for rounding purposes as indicated on the SOL chart.

And I've seen nobody who came from the "wrong" side.
But the points went into the wrong ranking. Counted as week race, although it's declared as a weekender. So everybody who finished on monday gets a DSQ now :)

ciao

Tall Ships Races 2025 - Le Havre to Dunkirk

Welcome to the first of four virtual Tall Ships Races in European waters which are concurrently being organized in-real-life by Sail Training International . The course for this first race is between the French ports of Le Havre and Dunkirk; circa 125nm in Sailonline’s magnificent 90m Barque.

Red Eye - Key Lime Pie-gatta 2025

Opposite the Bahamas at the tip of the Florida peninsula, we find the Florida Keys, a honky-tonk arpeggio of islands, where another SOL classic, the Key Lime Pie-gatta, so-called after the famous local condensed-milk-based tart speciality, awaits to be navigated once again. We’ll race its “Red Eye” 180nm in very-American Santa Cruz 52s, ignoring such artefacts as bridges, causeways and piers joining the keys one to the other and to the mainland!

Sail Around Turkey 2025

Welcome to the 11th running of one of Sailonline's most iconic races, where our fleet races the length of the Turkish coastline from Hopa (the easternmost harbour on Turkey’s Black Sea coast) to Iskenderun (the easternmost harbour on Turkey’s Mediterranean coast). It’s a 1,372nm race and aboard our classic, 1st decade of the 21st Century, version 2 IMOCA 60, you should be able to get around the course in less than a week. That is if, of course, once you get out of the Black Sea you don’t stop to enjoy the sights or a BBQ or two in the Golden Horn, or on the Marble Islands, now land-locked Troy or Gallipoli or any of the myriad Aegean islands, that you shall have to carefully navigate past.
