Last year stoertebaeker and me decide to do our own race by building a longship for the 2015 Up to Helly Aa race, and burn it as people fro these marvellous islands do every January with a real size one, record it on video and send it to SOL to see which one was more nice, and burns better.

Maybe any other SOLer want to join this new competition for the next time.

Here I link some pics from my boat, ready to burn in less than 24 hours

I hope you like it :-)

What a lovely model!!! I wonder what the real Up Helly aa boat will be like and what colour the uniforms will be this year :-)
and here's the wrecked hull of a Footy belonging to Rod which will also be burned!! Rod grew up near Lindisfarne, which was the site of the first Viking raid on an English monastery... they do remember...

It is a curious shape because "I (Rod) was experimenting with methods to make Footy hulls with excessively cheap methods and materials--the Footy is not supposed to cost a lot of money, but it is supposed to be highly advanced in design.....This one was designed on a CAD program, the stations made of paper with foam blocks sanded to shape then glued together into a hull shape, covered in paper and piaint, then foam dissolved."

Leg Three of our Round North Island Series, in partnership with SSANZ, keeps the pressure on! From Cook Strait, the fleet turns north for a 187 nautical mile passage up the east coast to Napier. Iceland to the Falklands 2026

Welcome to an all-new route, the first of three Round the 'Old World' of Europe, Africa, Australia and Asia. To give each leg of the ROW a bit of length we'll try to hug the coasts as little as possible, so starting in Iceland our first leg of the series, which will also be the final leg of our Quarter 1 Ocean Championships takes us 7200nm to the Falklands, the full length of the Atlantic end to end. To make sure we'll get it done within the month we'll be sailing our Maxi Trimaran.
