Board » Sailonline Yacht Club » Predictor line desirable feature

I like the new beta version. The orange dot is v.useful. Even more useful would be the option to display a predictor line that takes current DCs into account.

For those of us in the Southern hemisphere (or just those that like unbroken sleep), it would be exceedingly useful to get a better idea of what DCs are going to do with current forecasts.

I imagine this would not require huge amounts of coding... of course I don't have to do the coding :>

Whether the predictor is calculated in the client or server I'm not sure. Either way, no real difference.

It has been suggested by many... discussed, considered and decided against inclusion.
For numerous reasons :-)

Hi,
IMO the basic thinking in/of SOL that it is not a "game", but a simulator that also is a "teaching/learning" instrument. The "important" matters should be (and are) left to the skipper. Personally I had problems already with the presentation of dual predictors. SOL should, IMO, be more education than entertainment.
just another 2 bits :)
I don't use a router, but I do calculate ahead while considering future courses. If the winds are stable I use 6 hr steps, if needed I advance my predicted course hour by hour. As this is a routine for any navigator, and can be done here, I see no direct reason why it should be done automatically within the SOL program.
Routers, of course, do the same thing---obviously much better than I do, but I 'sail' in SOL for the benefit of my own brain, not that of 'brainaid' or other router developers.
If it breaks, it's not strong enough--if it doesn't, it's too heavy.
If there was an option to show the effect of DC's for the next 6 hours only, then this will not be as effective as a full router predicting the entire course. I would be happy that this only occured when the DC REFRESH dutton is clicked.

It would be the same as IRL where the navigator plots his course and steps off a distance and says we will tack or alter course at this point e.g. to clear an island. The navigator then sleeps whilst the on watch crew sail and tack or change course at that predetermined point IRL or time occurs in SoL.

Like Rod, I don't use a router and enjoy trying to beat others using my brain and guess work, until I go aground, yet again, after being interrupted by work or family or sleep all night. LOL!!
If it breaks, it's not strong enough!

Christmas to Christmas Island 2025

Two waypoints, start and finish, and between them 5827 NM of two oceans. Not much time if we want to sit at the Christmas Eve table. You will need to maintain an average speed of over 10 knots, maybe quite possible with this Maxi Trimaran, but prepare your vessel well and choose the best of the many possible routes. Hands up everyone who knew there were TWO Christmas Islands?! OK, maybe you have sailed this Sailonline course before... but it's time to get ready for the 2025 challenge of racing between Christmas Island in the Pacific to Christmas Island in the Indian Ocean! It also marks the conclusion of our prestigious Ocean Race Championship 2025. Please have fun! Fair winds!

Andaman Islands PYOC 2025

The Andaman Islands are an archipelago, made up of 200 islands, in the northeastern Indian Ocean. Together with the Nicobar Islands to their south, the Andamans serve as a maritime boundary between the Bay of Bengal to the west and the Andaman Sea to the east. These waters will be the theater of our next 240nm race in the ARCH 2025 series. Which one you choose depends only on you, i.e. your Elan 410 sport will leave the Andaman Islands on the starboard or port side.

Sinbad by Balloon 2025 - Carnarvon to Dondra

From here, our home in Bharatavarṣa is now north west of us – said Sinbad to his fellow balloonists. Perhaps we can ride the wind first further north, and then catch the winds that every year bring the rain, perhaps not. It’s 2600nm and we could be aloft awhile, so, Master el-Quarters, victuals only, no sandbags, provisioning the giant hamper. It will be not a picnic!
