Why is it that the good guys go first?

Ive long held the belief that the brightest candles burn out the quickest. What a terrible loss to our sailing community!

Go well Aaron! We all will miss you!

Rainbow I propose Life Long Membership for Aaron! His contribution to SOL has been huge and the long list of postings is testament to his having touched us all!

George and Arlene Snoek
Hi Rainbow

I meant permanent membership - In Memorium

Sorry for the post maybe seeming crass

George
Sorry to hear about that. My condolences to his family.

Always working, always helping, always improving our SOL experience. You've left a lot of friends all around the world.

Fair winds, Aaron, wherever you are.
RC, I'll second Jaws' motion... Good idea.
I like to talk a lot... sometimes I even make sense, mostly not...
Hat tip to ShamrockPirate, very nice words.

Its been nearly two days since I heard the news of AGage's passing and haven't been able to put the right words together. Still can't find them.
I never met Aaron and didn't know him for very long, but being a few years older and having worldly experience under my belt, I knew he was quality from the first time we said g'day.
He introduced himself to me at the start of just my second SOL race and he gave invaluable tips on how to get around all the hidden tools and tricks. That was a sign of his generosity and willingness to help newbies. The words expressed by others here highlight just how generous he was to everyone in the SOL community and no doubt in real life he was the same. Also, his technical contribution to SOL was immense and will be sorely missed. However, life and SOL must go on and we must strive to continue the development and promotion of SOL. Aaron would want us to do so.

My thoughts are with Indi, Jen and Katrina, his family and friends.
We have lost a gem.

R.I.P. AGage - set sails and head for the next waypoint, eternity.

Robert Neilson "Tyger"
Melbourne, Australia.

Aaron

I am so shocked, that I cannot find words, yet I must. I feel crippled by sadness, and tears run down my face as I write this.

Thankyou. With your help, I learnt very quickly how to sail successfully in SOL. You helped me to understand how to be in the rat-pack, not just by following one of the leaders, but by making decisions for myself.

I wondered why you had not moved forward from the start on your last race. I wondered why I had not seen you online, why you were absent from races. You were a constant presence, and it is sorely missed.

Your willingness to help us newbies to sail better, your advise to help us learn how to be better sailors IRL, your willingness to take time out of your busy life to chat on skype. Your wonderful SOLing tools. Your passion.

So many people live their lives in desperate mediocrity, but not you Aaron - you lived your life with passion.

As a mother, my heart goes out to your mother. To loose a child is just wrong . . . and to loose a son with your passion for life, unimaginable.

My condolences to your family Aaron, for your loss must be felt very keenly indeed.

Blessed be my friend
May fair winds and following seas be with you always.
Merran

Transat à Deux 2025

Above you see a single-handed sailor semi-foiling his Beneteau Figaro III to the horizon. It is in fact Ireland’s Sailor of the Year and the overall winner of last year’s Solitaire du Figaro, Tom Dolan. Somehow, we got our hands on a polar for the Class, and rather than trying to surreptitiously track Tom and his mates in the 2025 edition of the Solitaire, sailing rather-short, single-handed legs across the Celtic Sea and Biscay, we thought we’d see how our virtual craft would fare on the Class’s double-handed 3900nm Trans-Atlantic, from somewhere in Brittanny to somewhere in the Caribbean via somewhere in the Canaries. Allez, mes braves!

Sinbad by Balloon 2025 - Toamasina to Baia de l'Oiseau

You may recall that when last we visited Madagascar in the company of Sinbad, the Sultan commanded our intrepid inspirator to seek out fabled islands where in Summer the sun barely set. We did and we returned but the Sultan wasn’t happy with Sinbad’s report, so here we go again, now by SOL Balloon instead of sailing vessel. Expect to be in the air for at least 2100nm and depending on how the wind brings us, anything between two weeks and two months before we shall descend at the Sultan’s given coordinates!
