The last race I entered (Tasmania-NZ)I cobbled together a web application to 'scrape' info from the miniclient web page (http://www.sailonline.org/m/) and, on one of the variable going more than or less than a value it posted a cc or twa instruction. It is possible to navigate out of a harbour using lat or lon or tack or gybe on shifts.

However it is still quite hard to set it up and my first few instructions 'expired' before being executed and I started the race 6 hours behind!

It's php and MySQL run every five minute with cron. Obviously it would be far simpler running on python 'from the inside' as there would be no parsing of info from the web page! But, after I get back from holiday in two weeks, I will look at making the service available for anyone else to use if there is any interest.

Don't know if this is related but I have been sailing along at quite an excess over my 100% BS according to the polar:

Great work on this interface! It seems to do everything as expected with IE7 but the +/- map buttons cause the map to disappear (eventually) in Firefox and on a Nokia phone it seems to go back to log on screen. If I shut down and restart Firefox map reappears but not if I just log off sailonline.org. I can get back into my boat control without entering password if I select from the history of miniclient urls with a userid number.

However, as I said above, quite usable as it is for emergencies!

    Jakob,
I don't know any details of your database but I would imagine you will need a new alerts table or add some fields to the stored steering instructions table. I would have thought it was sufficient to store (as well as boat_id, race_id etc):

    degrees
    minutes
    action to sms if
    1. N of this lat
    2. S of this lat
    3. W of this long
    4. E of this long
    5. TWD < this bearing
    6 TWD > this bearing

The TWD options would be triggered by the TWD falling into the bearing +/- 180 degrees.

You would probably want the entries to lapse from the table after 24 hours.

If you use an email to text service like textmagic then you will have to pay and I'm not sure how you would administer this but you would probably need a counter on the user table (as well as mobile number).

I think the stripped down form needs:
    speed
    TWS
    TWA
    TWD
    course
    then steeing input fields:
    compass course
    true wind angle
    delay command
(you don't need the radio buttons just test whether the fields have been set)
then the set alerts fields mentioned above
then a list of stored instructions and alerts with checkboxes to allow deletion

Finally, your webpage was ok with phones that can cope with html but not for wml type phones. I don't know if you want to bother with this at this stage.

Also think it's a very wise commercial decision to have this as a members only feature.

jakob, I'm impressed if you put up that page in response to my post. I'm also impressed if you were already doing it. So much so that it galvanized me to join an pay my 25E support contribution. I will watch this space with great interest!

    Patrick

PS You realize that once this is up and running people will start asking for msm alerts on passing latitude X or wind backing more than Y!!!

I struggled yesterday a couple of times as I was cycling to a theme-park with kids and later out to dinner. (I was only saved by the kind intervention of clash2)

It occurs to me that it would be good to have a very simple html form with basic location, speed and wind direction info and ability to enter instructions as on the client application. Possibly with a second form to view and delete stored instructions. Not too hard to do I think.

I would be happy to do this, or help.

Good question. That was the last thing I did and it worked afterwards. I had changed one thing at a time on the 3D setting and restarted the client application each time and I unset them afterwards (as far as I could remember). However in the past I have been through a similar process installing drivers etc and having failed to solve the problem put everything back as it was, restarted the computer and it worked!

In this case if I switch 32 to 16 bits and back the map appears and disappears.

    Very good game.

    1. As mentioned elsewhere select radio button whenever focus goes to CC or TWA field. Also check box whenever focus goes to delay field.
    2. You probably got the message about delayed instruction being triggered by reaching a certain lat or long (or waypoint).
    3. Save positions and sizes of windows for next start.
    4. Distortion on maximise (mentioned to Neil)
    5. Having messed around to get the client running on a vista laptop it might be an idea to write a java version of the client. This would get the power of Sun and a larger on line community fixing bugs with the virtual machine on different platforms. (You would only need one version of the application to run on windows, mac, linux etc and it could be launched from a web page). I'm not promising but I might be willing to help with some code conversion when you sort out the commercial side (and if you decide it might be a good idea to do this)

Searching on the internet for OpenGL and Vista this looks like it will be an increasingly frequent problem!

On my laptop I did:control panel|classic view|Intel GMA driver for mobile (will be different on other computers)|display settings|color quality=16 bit

I tried fiddling with the 3D settings as per the other post but I don't think they did the trick.

PS it would be handy to have a search of the forum, or even the site as it took quite a while to find the post you referred to. Google doesn't reindex often or deeply enough for [xyz site:www.sailonline.org] to find things

Red Eye - Hobart Convict Run 2026

Back in 2010, one of our SOLers of the first hour, AUS_Scott76, came up with this ‘Convict Run’ out from Hobart, past Cape Raoul and the penal colony of Port Arthur, round Tasman Island, up and back down the east coast of Tasmania, to finish with a tight technical run – so Scott called it – up the picturesque D'entrecasteaux Channel, home to Hobart once again. It’s 250nm, ideal for a bit of ‘Red Eye’ in comfortable Finngulf 43’s, and if the original idea was to pick up some convicts on the way for a bit of R&R and sea air, you may always drop’m back before returning to Hobart!

New Ice Age 2026 - Longyearbyen to Browerville

Although we have by no means exhausted the possibilities of ice boating on lakes at high latitudes or high altitudes, it was noticeable that as our 2025 Series progressed, there were calls from time to time for longer-distance challenges, and so in response to these calls we will pretend that global warming has reversed and as a result the coastal waters of Antarctica and Russia and Canada have fully (and smoothly!) frozen over offering us the possibility of a 4-race New Ice Age series in our trusted no-PL DN machines. Our first leg takes us 2600nm from Svalbard’s Longyearbyen east to North Alaska’s Browerville. You’ll be a few days on the ice, so dress warmly and take some provisions; go!

Cross the Convergence 2026 - Robinson Crusoe to Galapagos

Welcome to our first race of a new series of ocean voyages across the World’s convergence zones, this first race taking you north from south of the Tropic of Capricorn to the Equator-straddling Galapagos, home of magical iguanas and other exotic fauna (but no mythical kings, Dory) Departing from the island where in 1704 adventurer Alexander Selkirk inspired Daniel Defoe to write the best-seller "The Life and Adventures of Robinson Crusoe", by debarking off the unsound "HMS Cinque Ports", four months before she foundered off the coast of present-day Colombia, we will sail the 2200nm in our decidedly sounder and faster than the " Cinque Ports",
